Lake Kinnelon and the tale of Smoke Rise New Jersey

This episode is sponsored by (a friend of Skyland Creative)

FUN FACT: Did you know Smoke Rise is one of the oldest, private, gated communities in the United States?

This unique name was given by the indigenous people because of the way the fog rose from Lake Kinnelon which seemed to turn into smoke. The smoke they were referring to is the mist that rises from the lake at sunset.

It is said that Francis Kinney loved his wife so much that he built her a chapel close to home so she wouldn't have to travel 7 miles to the nearest church. The name given to the medieval style chapel is St. Hubert’s Chapel and it’s only accessible by boat because it sits on Chapel island in Lake Kinnelon. Francis Kinney hired Tiffany Glass Company to design and create the majestic ecclesiastical stained glass found in St. Hubert’s chapel.

This land and wealth was inherited by Francis Kinney’s son Morris, whom the town was later named after. Morris lived most of his life on the estate at Smoke Rise and upon his death in 1945, Smoke Rise was willed to his lifelong friend John Talbot Sr.

John Talbot Sr, was a real estate developer in NY, patron of the arts and was credited for his role in the revival of ballet in the 1930s. He lived at Smoke Rise in a beautiful English Manor overlooking Lake Kinnelon.

John Dalton was responsible for The Smoke Rise Club, an exclusive, private lake club as well as Smoke Rise Tennis Club and Smoke Rise Riding Club where you can ride your horse right in town.

At Smoke Rise there is Village Green, which hosts soccer, basketball and tennis games. There are numerous activities you can do at Lake Kinnelon in Smoke Rise. Some include relaxing at the beach, playing a game of volleyball, basketball or perhaps a game at the horseshoe pits. There are also docks for boats and storage areas for kayaks and canoes.

It is said that each house looks different and unique from each other. However, an indigenous pink puddingstone is used freely in construction.

3 Scenic Places to Visit in Paterson NJ

Hi folks, on today’s episode we’re going to check out one of the oldest cities in the United States. It’s located right here in Passaic county, Passaic river passes through this city and it was nicknamed “Silk City”......Have you figured out where we’re heading to today?
That’s right...We’re going to visit Paterson on today’s episode of Skylands.

Paterson, named after the statesman and Governor William Paterson, was once a bustling, vibrant city. In 1792, Alexander Hamilton, formed an investment group called the Society of Useful Manufactures that invested in the industrial birth of this city.

Fun Fact: Paterson is often referred to as the cradle of the Industrial Revolution in America.

Hamilton believed that America needed to reduce its dependence on foreign goods and should develop its own industries. These industries developed in Paterson were powered by the 77 ft Great Falls coupled with a system of water raceways. Originally, the Falls powered a few mills and manufacturing structures associated with the textile industry then the firearms, silk and railroad manufacturing industries. It was said that in the later half of the 18th century, silk production was the dominant industry and that earned Paterson, the nickname “Silk City.”

Paterson became a place where immigrants would come to work; they made up most of the industries’ workforce. In 1913, the Paterson’s silk and textile workers went on strike; protesting the poor working conditions, long work hours, low wages and child labor. During this 6 month strike, 1850 people were arrested and jailed. This strike lasted approximately 6 months but it failed to meet all the demands.

In 1932, the city of Paterson constructed the Hinchliffe Stadium;an Art deco concrete stadium. It was the home of the New York Black Yankees and Newark Eagles. The Hinchliffe stadium was one of the few stadiums where black people were allowed to play professional baseball.

Garret Mountain, a 568 acre park, is a National Landmark in New Jersey. This park is the county’s most popular recreational area, providing visitors from the tri-state area with numerous activities to do. Some include; grass fields for picnics and games, multiple walking/hiking trails, Barbour’s Pond for fishing and an Equestrian center with horseback riding lessons.

Fun Fact: did you know that Garret Mountain is a stop-over point for migrating songbirds, warblers, orioles, sparrows and thrushes. Birdwatchers from the tri-state area come here to this hotspot to observe the different species of birds along the trails.

Standing tall at 70 feet, Lambert Tower is situated within Garret Mountain Reservation. It was built in 1896 by a silk mill entrepreneur named Catholina Lambert. This structure was built to be reminiscent of the castles in Great Britain where Catholina Lambert spent most of his childhood.

Paterson fell into decline Post World War ll; the city suffered high unemployment rates and Red-lining. Businesses closed due to competition from the malls in Paramus and Wayne. Other contributing factors include several fires and natural disasters that struck the downtown area over the last few decades.

What is Boonton NJ famous for?

to submit contest entry, winners get a free t-shirt.

Currently called Boonton, this quirky town owes its name to a Thomas Boone, a Colonial Governor, in the 1700's. Boone-Towne was established around the ironworks industry and grew under a man named Obadiah Baldwin.

During the American Revolutionary War, the Booneton Iron Works produced iron for the military. Later, with the construction of the Morris Canal, the New Jersey Iron Company was formed and the town grew.

Speaking of wars, Boonton Citizens proudly served in WWII

During WWII, people flew a flag with a blue star in their front window so everyone in town knew that a family member was serving in the military. If the star was gold however, it indicated that a soldier had died in the line of duty.

Welcome to Boonton Reservoir. During the 18th Century this area was Called Boonetown Falls, and the center of town was around where the reservoir sits today.

In 1908, John Leal with the help of George Fuller constructed a chlorination plant at Boonton Reservoir which became the first of its kind in the nation. Around the same time Boonton's Loanda Hard Rubber Company became famous for producing a type of early plastic used in kitchens worldwide.

Did you know that Grace Lorde Park sits on Boonton Gorge. A Gorge is defined as a narrow valley between hills or mountains, typically with steep rocky walls and a stream running through it.

Created in 1829 the time the morris canal was used to transport coal to the ironworks and then products to markets. The Morris canal was a complex series of locks and planes that allowed water and boats to connect industry to markets and harbors. After just under 100 years of service the rail road came and the morris canal was mostly broken apart.

This is also the site of the original Booton, which was flooded to create the Booton Reservoir. This reservoir provides drinking water to the residents of Jersey City, NJ

I'm at the The United Railroad Historical Society of New Jersey, Inc. a non-profit educational organization which supports the preservation of historic railroad equipment in New Jersey. Check out all these train cars!

The Boonton Branch was a rail road built in 1870 and ran 34 miles from Hoboken to East Dover Junction. The railroad passed through Lyndhurst, Passaic, Clifton, Paterson, Wayne, Lincoln Park, Mountain Lakes, and its namesake, Boonton. Originally formed as a Freight Line carrying materials, the rail line currently run by New Jersey Transit, has been serving commuters and travelers alike ever since.

Quintessential Small town NJ, Welcome to Bloomingdale, home of the 'Queens Own'.

Main street in Bloomingdale rests along the river path on a long traveled Indian road called the Minisink Trail, this trail is one of many long treaded paths the native Americans used when they called this land their home.

But the story of Bloomingdale really starts with a man named Martin J Ryerson, a respected, wealthy man who lived in Ringwood Manor in his Youth. Martin's father, Martin I Ryerson, who owned many mines in the area, and was one of the founders of Ringwood, died at a young age and passed his legacy to his son Martin. Then after inheriting a fortune of properties from his grandfather, Mr Ryerson moved to Bloomingdale and established the Bloomingdale furnace, forge, and mill which was used to process iron found in nearby mines.

Ryerson realized that Bloomingdale and his business would benefit from a railroad and with his money, power and influence he ended up making the railroad a reality, and Bloomingdale as a town grew from a stop-over town to the picturesque small town from yesteryear thanks to the railroad station. With a main street that bosted of a Hotel, General Store, Post Office, and Two small Churches. Bloomingdale's Union Square was in the location where Ward's Plaza now sits; the intersection of Main Street and Hamburg Turnpike.

Fun Fact, the railroad station had many setbacks before it came to fruition, but most notably a homeowner whose property was on the planned track line refused to give permission until the Railroad promised to build a stop on her property, Which they did and kept their promise.

In 1905 a fire department was not yet established and a large portion of Main Street burned down. Newspapers from the time stated that people from neighboring towns came to assist in a bucket brigade, passing buckets from person to person from the River to the fire.

Another Fun Fact, Did you know that Bloomingdale at one time had a world-famous toilet paper that was so expensive that its primary customer was royalty in England? It was dubbed, The Queens Own and was manufactured at Pequannock Valley Paper Mill

Bloomingdale has changed much over the years, with Mainstreet littered with businesses, and homes but it never lost its small-town feel.

Greenwood lake is a breathtaking natural lake that is approximately 7 miles long and is located on the border of NY and NJ. It is the water source of the Wanaque River. Before it was known as Greenwood lake, it was called KUAM-PEE-OM by the MUN-SEE native tribe. Who lived there before the Europeans settled during the 18'th century and renamed it Long Pond.

The lake was an intricate part of the long pond ironworks operation, which benefited from a dam being built in 1765, which in turn increased the lake's size, and increased production in the ironworks.
It turns out that a larger lake also became a DESTINATION spot for tourists like BABE RUTH, and the JETER FAMILY!

Fun fact: back in the day people would travel by train only to board a steamboat to take them across the lake to the various resorts that existed back then.

Did you know that there is an island in the lake called Chapel island?

Years ago, a church was the lone structure on the island, and it was only accessible by boat. It stood there for years before it burnt down in 1948.

Fast forward to today: Greenwood lake is a vibrant, thriving lake community. - it offers tons of fun- outdoor adventures and activities! There is definitely something for everyone in the family to do at Greenwood lake. From hiking to boutique shopping and antiquing.

Parsippany NJ

This video looks best in 4K.

- Parsippany-Troy Hills Township, commonly known as Parsippany, is a township in Morris County, New Jersey, United States. As of the 2010 United States Census, the township's population was 53,238, reflecting an increase of 2,589 (+5.1%) from the 50,649 counted in the 2000 Census, which had in turn increased by 2,171 (+4.5%) from the 48,478 counted in the 1990 Census.

The name Parsippany comes from the Lenape Native American sub-tribe, which comes from the word parsipanong, which means the place where the river winds through the valley. Parsippany-Troy Hills is the most populous municipality in Morris County. The name Troy Hills was changed from Troy, to avoid confusion of mail being sent erroneously to Troy, New York.

Parsippany-Troy Hills was incorporated as a township by an act of the New Jersey Legislature on March 12, 1928, from portions of Hanover Township, based on the results of a referendum held on May 9, 1928, that split off both East Hanover Township and Parsippany-Troy Hills from Hanover Township.

Since 2006, Parsippany-Troy Hills has been consistently recognized by Money magazine as one of the Best Places to Live in the United States. That year Parsippany was ranked 17th on the list, the highest-ranked location in New Jersey. In 2008, it moved up to 13th position. Parsippany returned to Money magazine's Best Places list in 2012, in the 15th position, and again in 2014, where it ranked 16th with Money citing its Arts and leisure. Parsippany's ranking improved to the 5th-ranked position on the Best Places list in 2016, but in 2017 dropped to 33rd. In 2018, Parsippany again made the list, at the 23rd-ranked position.

Kayaking near Pompton Lake

“See the TURTLE of enormous girth! On his shell, he holds the earth.
― Stephen King

Welcome to Pompton lake, a man-made lake nestled between the townships of Oakland and Wayne. The borough of Pompton Lakes was based around the Pompton Iron Works, German Artistic Weaving Company, and then later the DuPont Company. From 1800 to the early 1900s Pompton Lakes was served by the New York and Susquehanna Railroad at the Pompton Junction, bringing business, industry, and at one point tourism to the borough.

Before America was Founded, before the Dutch even came to settle these lands, the Ramapo River was home to various native tribes. The Lenne Lenape, Munsee, Ramapo, and the Pompton People have all lived in this region. Speaking two different dialects Munsee and Unami, the tribes often met, traded, or clashed throughout the ages.

The largest grouping is the Lenne Lenape, which fell into 3 different groups, each following a different totem animal. The people, on whose land I am currently on, were of the turtle. Northwest of here where the people of the Wolf and along the coast was the turkey. In addition to the totemic animal, The Lenape worships the Sun, Fire, and the Four Winds. The four winds were the bringers of rain and sunshine and rulers of the weather, while the fire was considered the Grandfather of all Indian nations.

Did you know that The missionaries often referred to the native priests as medicine men? These men were not only healers but also oracles.

Fun Fact the Lenne Lenape had a Piece time and Wartime chief, shifting the power when the situation arises. Both of which were separate from the so-called Medicine Men

Let's talk a bit about the legends. Originally passed down verbally then painted as pictographs, one of the most famous of the Lenne Lenape tales is that told in The Walam Olum. *

It was believed that in the beginning there were two forces, one good and one bad. The good one created the turtle, and out of the turtles' shell grew a massive tree which sprouted the first people. The evil one created the snake. The snake brought sickness, droughts, and hated the people, so he flooded the land forcing them to retreat into canoes. The people sailed until they found a small dry spot on the back of the great turtle. Eventually, the waters calmed, dried up, and receded, and as it did the turtle shell exposed more land and vegetation started to grow, giving the people a new home and starting the legend that the world rests on the back of a turtle.

Did you know that During the great depression thousands of writers were hired by the Works Project Administration to create guidebooks on all 50 states? In the one about this area specifically, the author wrote that every person he met in town had a different idea of where Haskell ended and Wanaque began. I'll let you decide that one.
