The Big Hole, Kimberley Diamond Mine in South Africa - Bonus Clip | THE UNJUST & US

Check out Inspired Risk's first feature-length documentary:

During our journey back from Nairobi to Cape Town, we stopped to check out The Big Hole, a diamond mine in Kimberley, South Africa. This deleted scene gives a more detailed look at our visit to this unique place.

The Big Hole, Open Mine, Kimberley Mine or Tim Kuilmine is an open-pit and underground mine, and claimed to be the deepest hole excavated by hand, although this claim is disputed.

The first diamonds here were found by Erasmus Jacobs on Colesberg Kopje by members of the Red Cap Party from Colesberg on the farm Vooruitzigt belonging to the De Beers brothers, in 1871. The ensuing scramble for claims led to the place being called New Rush, later renamed Kimberley in 1873. From mid-July 1871 to 1914 up to 50,000 miners dug the hole with picks and shovels, yielding 2,720 kilograms (6,000 lb; 13,600,000 carats) of diamonds.

Since the early 2000s, an effort to register the Big Hole as a World Heritage Site has been underway.

In 1872, one year after digging started, the population of the camp of diggers grew to around 50,000. As digging progressed, many men met their deaths in mining accidents. The unsanitary conditions, scarcity of water and fresh vegetables as well as the intense heat in the summer, also took their toll. On 13 March 1888 the leaders of the various mines decided to amalgamate the separate diggings into one big mine and one big company known as De Beers Consolidated Mines Limited, with life governors such as Cecil John Rhodes, Alfred Beit, and Barney Barnato. This huge company further worked on the Big Hole until it came to the depth of 215 metres, with a surface area of about 17 hectares and perimeter of 1.6 kilometres. By 14 August 1914, when over 22 million tons of earth had been excavated, yielding 3,000 kilograms (14,504,566 carats) of diamonds, work on the mine ceased after it was considered the largest hand-dug excavation on earth. By 2005, however, it was reported that a researcher had re-examined mine records and found that the hand-dug portions of the Jagersfontein and Bultfontein diamond mines, also in South Africa, may have been deeper and/or larger in excavated volume. There are other, larger, mine excavations, but these were created using earth-moving equipment rather than manual labour.

The Kimberley Process Certification Scheme is a global diamond certification system. The certification scheme was adopted on 1 January 2003 and renders any global trade of diamonds without government issued certificate as illegal. The efficacy of the Kimberley Process is dependent on its state-led border controls however, these are being undermined by weaker national governments. Organizations such as the Global Witness pulled out of the scheme on 5 December 2011, claiming that the scheme does not provide markets with certainty that the diamonds are not conflict diamonds. Both the Kimberley Process and the US Clean Diamond Trade Act aim to ensure that purchased diamonds are 'morally clean' and are not associated with any foul play. Leonardo DiCaprio's movie Blood Diamond reveals the foul play that can exist in diamond trade and a reference to the Kimberley Process Certification Scheme is made at the end of the film.

With mining operations closed down in 1914, the open pit became an attraction for visitors to the city. By the 1960s, a gathering together of relics of Kimberley's early days, including old buildings and sundry memorabilia, began to be organised into a formal museum and tourist attraction. In 1965 De Beers appointed Basil Humphreys as museum consultant, with the museum being substantially upgraded as an open-air representation of early Kimberley. These upgrades included streetscapes, dioramas, and exhibits of mining technology and transport. There was an official opening during the Kimberley centenary celebrations in 1971. One of the attractions was the Diamond Hall. The Mine Museum went through subsequent upgrades. Between 2002 and 2005 De Beers invested R50 million in developing the Big Hole into a tourism facility, based on the idea of creating a lasting legacy for the people of Kimberley. The new facility, the Big Hole Kimberley, and its theme of 'Diamonds and Destiny', was expected to double visitor numbers to the Big Hole.

Kimberley: Life at the Edge of the World | SLICE TRAVEL | FULL DOC

The Kimberley region of Australia is among the most lonely and barren places on earth. This region – covering an area larger than Germany – is extremely hostile. Nonetheless, 40,000 people have embraced its magnificent seclusion and chosen to make a life for themselves here. It is a landscape that captivates everyone with its breath-taking beauty.

There is one road that connects everything: The Great Northern Highway – the lifeline of this region. For about 1000 kilometres, it carries us through the rugged heart of this spectacular landscape.

This is the land of the Aborigines, whose history is inextricably linked with the history of the region. Through them we learn what it means to venerate nature. They bring us to the holy spots of their forefathers and let us share in their unique way of life – caught between the modern world and the past.

Along the Great Northern Highway, one of only three roads in this entire 420,000 square kilometres region, the owners of huge cattle farms have set up business. They can only keep an overview of their operations using aeroplanes, thereby covering areas the size of Schleswig-Holstein. This is rugged work, in rugged surroundings. In summer, the sun burns down at a merciless 50 degrees, leaving all living things withered and dry. During rainy season, the dried out riverbeds transform into raging floods.

Nature provides the people of the Kimberleys with other dazzling treasures: diamonds. Pink diamonds, unique in the world and found here: in the largest diamond mines on Earth.

Real Streets of Kimberly a Diamond Mine City South Africa (I could retire here)

Kimberly is such a sweet place to be. This city is small but the largest in the northern cape of south africa.
Don't get me wrong, for me this is one of my favourite amongst the other ones I visited.
Maybe it's the fact that it's a rich town as it is under a diamond 💎 mine..lol
Kimberly City is situated in the northern cape.
The big hole 🕳️ attracts many tourists, so it's a place to visit.
I also think it's a good small city for retirement.
It's so cool here.
languages are Sotho..Tswana and Afrikaans with English to top up. Xhosa language is also spoken here but at a limited number.
Be sure to visit.

S1 – Ep 344 – Kimberley – The Impressive Sentimental Journey which Surprised us!

Our visit to Kimberley began with a late arrival, but we wasted no time and dropped off our bags before heading out for dinner. The Mohawk Spur provided a delightful dining experience with delicious food. We knew that Kimberley had so much to offer, so we carefully selected a few places to explore the following morning. We marveled at the Cecil John Rhodes statue, paid our respects at the war memorials, and were left in awe by the breathtaking Anglican Cathedral, its size truly mind-blowing. A sentimental journey took us to St Patrick's CBC, where my father and uncle had attended school years ago. The impressive institution surprised us with its greatness. Of course, our visit wouldn't have been complete without a trip to the iconic Big Hole, a colossal highlight that left us amazed. #DustBugs #adventuretravel #southafrica #southafricavlog #travelongravel #northerncape #kimberley

💎 Why Visit Kimberley’s Big Hole? The Big Hole in Kimberley is not just a giant crater; it's a historical site that tells the story of the diamond rush that shaped South Africa's history and the city of Kimberley itself. Once a small mining settlement, Kimberley became a bustling town thanks to the discovery of diamonds in the late 19th century. The Big Hole and its surrounding attractions offer a unique blend of history, culture, and adventure.

🕳️ Highlights of Kimberley’s Big Hole - Your Ultimate Travel Guide:
The Big Hole Overview:
Start your journey by learning about the Big Hole, a massive hand-dug excavation that reaches a depth of 240 meters (790 feet). It was created by thousands of miners using only picks, shovels, and basic tools from 1871 to 1914. At its peak, the Big Hole was a bustling hub for diamond mining, producing some of the world's most valuable diamonds, including the famous Star of South Africa.

Big Hole Museum and Open-Air Mine Experience:
The Big Hole Museum offers an immersive experience into the history of diamond mining in Kimberley. Wander through replicas of 19th-century buildings, including an old saloon, blacksmith shop, and post office, to get a sense of life during the diamond rush era. The museum also features interactive exhibits, mining artifacts, and informative displays that provide a deeper understanding of the challenges and triumphs of early miners.

Viewing Platform and Skywalk:
Step onto the viewing platform that overlooks the Big Hole and take in the breathtaking views of this incredible excavation. For the more adventurous, the Kimberley Skywalk offers a glass-floored extension that allows visitors to walk over the edge of the Big Hole for a thrilling perspective of its size and depth. This is a perfect spot for photography and to marvel at the sheer scale of this man-made wonder.

Underground Mine Tour:
Take a guided underground mine tour to experience what it was like for miners working in the diamond mines of Kimberley. The tour includes a descent into a replica mine shaft, where you can see original mining equipment, learn about diamond extraction techniques, and understand the grueling conditions faced by miners.

Old Town Kimberley:
Stroll through Old Town Kimberley, a meticulously recreated mining town that captures the spirit of the diamond rush days. Walk along the cobbled streets, explore antique shops, and enjoy the old-world charm that brings 19th-century Kimberley to life.

Kimberley Mine Museum Complex:
The Kimberley Mine Museum Complex houses a collection of historical buildings, artifacts, and mining machinery, offering a comprehensive look at the diamond industry that built Kimberley. Highlights include the Duggan-Cronin Gallery, which features an extensive photographic collection documenting the lives of indigenous people in Southern Africa.
