Connecticut | Episode #03 | Best Place to Visit in Connecticut | Tour Guide | Must Watch

▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬
Connecticut is rich in history, nature, art, and beauty. There is truly something for everyone. While many people are drawn to Mohegan Sun and Foxwoods Casinos each year, there is much more in this state. There are several beaches at the shore, state parks and forests throughout the state, and many smaller gardens. Gillette Castle State Park in East Haddam is an excellent family destination. So is the Essex Steam Train and River Boat Ride in Essex.
Understand about History of Connecticut.
Connecticut was one of the original 13 colonies of the United States. It was the fifth state to ratify the constitution in 1788. Over the following centuries, the state became a manufacturing center. It supported the war effort during the Civil War and the World Wars. Today, Connecticut is one of the wealthiest states in the union and is the home to many businesses.
Understand about Geography of Connecticut.
The State of Connecticut is divided in half by the Connecticut River, the largest river in New England. The state's general geographic regions can be understood as a set of quadrants, with Hartford, the state's capital, acting as the CenterPoint. Within the immediate vicinity of Hartford are the large towns of Manchester, New Britain, Bristol, Meriden, and Middletown, which have close ties with the capital, and the state's primary airport, Bradley International, 15 miles north of Hartford, in Windsor Locks. Looking beyond the heartland, the state's southeastern part has close ties to New York. It is highly developed and urbanized, including Bridgeport and New Haven and several historically affluent towns such as Stamford, Darien, and Greenwich. To the North of the urban agglomeration can be found the city of Danbury, the gateway to the state's rural northwest, and the manufacturing city of Waterbury. Moving along the shoreline, the state's southeastern part becomes significantly less urbanized than the southwest. It includes many of the state's fine beaches. This region consists of the historically important ports of Mystic, Groton, and New London and the crossroads city of Norwich. The northeastern part of the state, known to locals as the Quiet Corner, is very rural, with few significant population centers, but includes many historic towns, scenic parks, and woodlands. The largest city is Willimantic, in the southern part of the region, with the towns of Putnam and Killingly/Dayville acting as local centers of activity. The University of Connecticut in Storrs can be seen as a part of this region. The Northwestern part of the state is also very rural, especially in the northwestern corner. This region is known for its beautiful natural scenery, particularly hills and highlands and the Housatonic River, attracting visitors and campers from near and far. The region's largest town is Torrington. Several notable towns, such as Kent and New Canaan, are known for their affluent residents. The largest body of water in the state, Candlewood Lake, is in this region, as is the state's highest point, the slope of Mount Frissell (2,379 ft), on the border with Massachusetts.
Overall, the state contains eight counties and 169 towns and cities.
Understand the weather in Connecticut.
Like most of New England, the weather in Connecticut is varied with the seasons. It can be highly unpredictable in the spring and fall months. The weather in Connecticut is generally stable compared to many other parts of the country. Dangers that plague many country regions are not a danger here.
It is recommended to bring clothes for various temperatures when visiting and closely check the weather report. Although there are periods of little or no rain, a raincoat or umbrella are good items to pack. Warm clothes in the winter and light clothes in the summer are also necessary. However, it is recommended to pack a light jacket, even in the summer months.

This Geocache Was So Satisfying!

I loved this geocache hidden under a brick!

Birds in Pomfret, Connecticut | Audubon Society Center | Nature Walk

We visited the visitor center, and the staff was helpful and answered all our questions. There are several trails around the center that are well- maintained and easy to walk at. We saw a variety of birds along the trail. I shared pictures of different species of birds throughout the video, that you may see in this area, or around the state of Connecticut. At the end of our walk there is a viewing platform where you can enjoy listening to the chirping birds and watch the Tree Swallow come and go from its nesting box. It's a wonderful place to visit and see birds.

Tripping on Travel: Alexander Lake, Killingly, Connecticut

Alexander Lake in Killingly, Connecticut has been pretty well preserved since the construction several years ago of a Frito-Lay manufacturing facility across from the north end of the lake. I recorded the footage of N Shore Rd, that runs on the northwest side of the lake, on May 25th, 2022. As always, I used a GoPro 8 mounted to the outside of my vehicle.

Tripping on Travel: Quaddick State Park, Thompson, CT

Be careful not to get confused. There is also a Quaddick State Park in East Lyme, Connecticut. This one is in Thompson, CT. This park was founded as a forest recreation center in a portion of Quaddick State Forest. It became a 118 acre State Park in 1951. Long before it's use for public recreation, the location had been the site of Thompson's town farm, also known as a government-run facility to support and house the poor and the elderly. The park remains under the administration of the Connecticut Department of Energy and Environmental Protection.

Tripping on Travel: Plainfield, Connecticut

The route I drove in this video, Rt 12 south, is west of, and generally parallel, to I-395 and is less than one half mile from the interstate. The town of Plainfield comprises four villages; Plainfield, Moosup, Wauregan and Central Village. The town was considered an industrial center in the 19th and early 20th centuries because two local rivers provided power to the different mills around the town. Thus, job opportunities attracted workers from a variety of ethnic origins. For some time, Plainfield thrived as an industrial center. But as it approached the later years of the 20th century, industry slipped away. And now the town cares far less about development and thriving commercially, than they do keeping development and commercial progress under control.

⁴ᴷ⁶⁰ Driving Buckley Highway (Connecticut Routes 190 and 171) in Union, Connecticut

January 14, 2023 - 12:50 PM
34°F / 1°C

Dashcam view of driving eastbound on Buckley Highway (Connecticut Route 190 and Connecticut Route 171) through Union, Connecticut, from Fish Point Road to Mashapaug Road.

Highlights:
Interstate 84 interchange - 1:27
Old Town Hall (on right) - 5:29
Congregational Church of Union (on left) - 5:40
Union Public Library (on right) - 5:56
Connecticut Route 190 ends; Connecticut Route 171 portion begins - 6:48
Union Town Hall (on right) - 7:14

From Wikipedia:
Union is a town located in the northeastern part of Tolland County, Connecticut, United States and is part of the Quinebaug and Shetucket Rivers Valley National Heritage Corridor. The population was 785 at the 2020 census, making it the least populous town and municipality in Connecticut. Union includes the village of Mashapaug located in the Eastern Uplands at the Massachusetts state line. Union is located 33 miles (53 kilometers) northeast of the state capital, Hartford and 67 mi (108 km) southwest of Boston as well as 153 mi (246 km) northeast of New York City.

There were 500 people in the town in 1756. The population grew to 767 by 1800, but declined thereafter. There were just 431 people in Union in 1890. The official population of the town is still less than 1,000 residents today.

Union has the highest town center in eastern Connecticut at 1,015 feet (309 m) and the 4th highest in the state. The highest elevation in eastern Connecticut is 1,315 feet (401 m) Burley Hill in the northwest part of town. In addition, I-84 reaches its highest elevation in Connecticut (1,002 feet (305 m)) in Union.

Approximately one-third of the town is state park land, including Bigelow Hollow State Park, Nipmuck State Forest and the Mountain Laurel Sanctuary. A portion of the Yale-Myers Forest and Hull Foresters are located in Union. All combined, there are nearly 34,000 acres of forestland in Union.

Tripping on Travel: Grove St, Putnam, Connecticut

Grove Street in Putnam, Connecticut is one of the many features still left that speaks to the history of the town. And one of Grove Street's primary features is a monument to General Israel Putnam that was erected in a number of Connecticut towns. I drive right by it in this video and it can be found on the right-hand side of the street. The town was named in his honor. But just out of curiosity regarding his roots, I dug a little deeper. He has been celebrated for years as a hero of the French and Indian War and the American Revolution, as well as being the hunter that finally killed a dangerous wolf in Pomfret that was killing local livestock. What is not spoken of is that he was a descendant of the Putnam family that came from England and were among the first puritans who settled in Salem, Massachusetts. In fact, Israel Putnam's family tree leads back to Ann Putnam Jr and her father Thomas Putnam Jr,, both of whom were two of the primary accusers involved in the Salem Witch Trials of 1692-1693. At the time, daughter Ann was only 12 years old when she appeared afflicted and became a primary accuser of a number of people who were suspected of participating in witchcraft. One of Ann's uncles, Joseph Putnam, and his wife Elizabeth Porter, welcomed their son Israel Putnam into the world when he was born in Salem in 1718. At the approximate age of 31 years, Israel Putnam left Salem, Massachusetts and moved in 1749 to farm land he purchased in Pomfret, Connecticut. Other noteworthy details about Israel Putnam were expressed in an early biography that described him as having his negro assist him in getting into the wolf's den, but who would not obey his orders. As far as the hostile Indians he sometimes battled, they were considered to be nothing more than savages at that time in history.
