Cape Kaliakra
Kaliakra is a cape in the Southern Dobruja region of the northern Bulgarian Black Sea Coast, which ends with a long and narrow headland 12 kilometres east of Kavarna, 60 kilometres northeast of Varna and 65 kilometres southwest of Mangalia.
The coast is steep with vertical cliffs reaching 70 metres down to the sea.
Kaliakra is a nature reserve, where dolphins and cormorants can be observed.
It sits on the Via Pontica, a major bird migration route from Africa into Eastern and Northern Europe.
Many rare and migrant birds can be seen here in spring and autumn and, like much of this coastline, is home to several rare breeding birds.
The rest of the reserve also has unusual breeding birds; saker falcon, lesser grey shrike and a host of others.
It also features the remnants of the fortified walls, water-main, baths and residence of Despot Dobrotitsa in the short-lived Despotate of Dobruja's medieval capital.
The name Kaliakra is of Byzantine Greek origin. It is a combination of καλός (beautiful) and άκρα (headland or edge or extremity) and is traditionally translated as Beautiful Headland.
Kaliakra was the site of the naval Battle of Cape Kaliakra on 11 August 1791, part of the Russo-Turkish War (1787–1792).
The first modern lighthouse on Kaliakra was built in 1866 by the Compagnie des Phares de l’Empire Ottoman; the present one, a 10-metre cylindrical stone masonry tower with lantern and gallery, was erected in 1901, with focal plane height of 68 metres and a white flash.
Probably the most popular legend about the place is one about 40 Bulgarian girls, who preferred to tie their hair together and jump into the Black Sea rather than face the prospect of being captured by the Ottomans.
An obelisk dedicated to this legend is placed at the entrance to the cape, called The Gate of the 40 Maidens.
Another legend tells the story of Saint Nicholas, the patron of seamen, who was running away from the Ottomans when God made the earth under him longer and longer so he could escape, and the cape was formed this way.
The saint was eventually captured and a chapel was built in 1993, symbolizing his grave. A dervish monastery is also said to have existed on the same place during Ottoman rule, which is thought to have preserved the relics of Muslim Bektashi saint Sarı Saltık.
A third legend is about Lysimachus, a successor of Alexander the Great, who seized the royal treasure and escaped to Kaliakra, dying in a major storm along with his whole fleet.

Golful Bolata este o atractie de top de pe litoralul bulgaresc si din ce in ce mai multi romani vor sa vada frumusetea acestui loc inconjurat de natura si peisaje armonioase. Plaja Bolata, din golful cu acelasi nume, este una dintre plajele cele mai frumoase de pe litoralul bulgaresc si atrage an de an multi vizitatori gratie formei si asezarii sale aparte.
Golful Bolata apartine de Rezervatia Naturala Kaliakra si se afla la doar 3 kilometri de Capul Kaliakra, in nord. Golful are o forma semi circulara si gazduieste una dintre cele mai atragatoare plaje ale Bulgariei.
Tot la Golful Bolata exista si un mic rau care se varsa direct in mare, iar in zonele laterale ale plajei vei observa stanci de culoare caramizie.
Plaja Bolata sau Bolata Beach este o plaja salbatica, gratie zonei de care apartine, iar nisipul de aici este fin si apa curata. Intrarea in mare este destul de lina, insa exista o zona si cu intrare mai abrupta, in partea dreapta cum te uiti la mare.
Plaja Bolata are o forma de semicerc aproape perfecta, ceea ce-i da o frumusete incontestabila. Daca vrei sa faci poze wow, cele mai reusite cadre le vei surprinde nu de pe plaja, ci de pe dealul stancos din spatele acesteia.
Bolata Bay is a top attraction on the Bulgarian coast and more and more Romanians want to see the beauty of this place surrounded by nature and harmonious landscapes. Bolata Beach, in the bay of the same name, is one of the most beautiful beaches on the Bulgarian coast and attracts many visitors every year thanks to its special shape and location.
Bolata Bay belongs to the Kaliakra Nature Reserve and is only 3 kilometers from Cape Kaliakra, in the north. The bay has a semi-circular shape and hosts one of the most attractive beaches in Bulgaria.
Also at Bolata Bay there is a small river that flows directly into the sea, and in the side areas of the beach you will notice brick-colored rocks.
Bolata Beach or Bolata Beach is a wild beach, thanks to the area it belongs to, and the sand here is fine and the water is clean. The entrance to the sea is quite smooth, but there is an area with a steeper entrance, on the right side as you look at the sea.
Bolata Beach has an almost perfect semicircle shape, which gives it an undeniable beauty. If you want to take wow pictures, you will capture the best shots not from the beach, but from the rocky hill behind it.

Kavala is 5 hours away from Burgas and 4 hours from Sofia, Bulgaria, so it is practically next door.
With rich history it was part of ancient Greece, Roman Bizantium and Ottoman Empires.
Bulgarians invaded the city in 834 and it was part of Bulgaria until 1197, 300 years.
The Turks leveled the city in 1391 and until 1912 it was under the Ottoman dominance.
The city is famous with the aqueduct and the castle on the tip of old town. Both of them are built during the Ottoman Empire.
Driving and parking in the Old town is challenging. We recommend going on foot or taking a taxi.
You have a breath taking view from the Castle.
Being close to Bulgaria, the majority of the tourists on the beaches and villages south of Kavala, are Bulgarians. At the beach parking lot, absolutely all of the cars had Bulgarian license plates.
Golden sand, crystal clear water, cold drinks and delicious food. There is an abundance of restaurants and bars along the beach. small hotels and vacation rentals are all near the beach.
It is almost the end of September and the water is warm, like bath water. Northern Greece may not be as popular as other more famous destinations in Greece but, it has as much charm and beauty and it is not over run with tourists.
