What To Do in St Helena
This trip to the St. Helena took place from 15 - 18 February 2020, before the major current travel restrictions. I do not encourage anyone to travel now. #StayHome. Here's a video with my thoughts on the current situation:
St. Helena may just be one of my favorite places I’ve ever visited. The Saints are some of the kindest people I’ve ever come across in my travels. Because I had such a great time, I thought I’d try something different for this video about St. Helena.
I normally make videos here on YouTube about airlines, but perhaps the most amazing part of aviation are the places it can take. Places like St Helena. So, in this video about St Helena, I’m trying a little experiment: Let’s check out some things on the ground in St Helena! We’ll explore some of the highlights of St. Helena and some of what I enjoyed while I was here. Let me know what you think about this experiment by leaving comments. I always appreciate feedback! And next week, I’ll post a more typical video about my return to the mainland.
St. Helena is home to epic history, out-of-this-world scenery, and incredible opportunities for intreprid travelers.
We’ll explore the infamous Jacobs Ladder, Napoleon’s two residences on St. Helena, some of the hiking available on the island, as well as some of the most amazing vistas.
This is my first attempt at a video about something unrelated to aviation, so I’d appreciate your feedback. I think it’s probably fair to say I need to expand my coverage of things like accomodations and food if I continue with this. Also, maybe I’ll do this on a separate channel. Anyway, let me know what you think of this first attempt. And, also, let me know if you’re heading to St. Helena once we can all travel again!

Stories From Saint Helena's Past
The town of St. Helena was first settled in the mid-1800s by farmers and ranchers from the Napa Valley. The perfect sunny climate of the valley quickly attracted wine producers from other countries and by 1876 the city of Saint Helena saw its first winery begin operations.

CLIMBING JACOB'S LADDER IN JAMESTOWN, ST HELENA
Climbing Jacob's Ladder on the island of St. Helena in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean
Challenging Jacob's Ladder is an old staircase leading from the city of Jamestown, Saint Helena, up the side of Ladder Hill to Ladder Hill Fort.
The ladder is all that remains of an inclined train which was built there in 1829. Its tracks and of course its cars were later removed, although the stairs have remained in place. The stairs have become a major tourist attraction connecting Jamestown and the suburb of Half Tree Hollow at the top of the hill. Currently, one must walk up or down 699 somewhat uneven steps to conquer Jacob's Ladder. The angle of ascent is about 40 degrees. Hint: it is harder to go down Jacob's Ladder, than go up.
Incidentally, Jamestown is the capital of the British Overseas Territory of Saint Helena in the South Atlantic Ocean. It is also the main settlement of the island. Saint Helena measures about 10 by 5 miles and has a population of about 4,500. It was named after Saint Helena of Constantinople. It is one of the most isolated islands in the world and was uninhabited when discovered by the Portuguese in 1502. It was an important stopover for ships sailing to Europe from Asia and Southern Africa for centuries. Saint Helena is the United Kingdom's second-oldest overseas territory after lovely Bermuda.
Where is the Millennium forest on St Helena Island. Endemic trees in British Overseas Territory.
Millennium Forest, St Helena Island ❤️🇸🇭 consists of endemic tree species only found on the British Overseas Territory. A special project on the island. It is a peaceful, calming place away from everyday life. Overlooking the airport - it is a must visit on St Helena.
Launched in 2000 (hence the name), it's aim is an ambitious project to reforest the site of the Great Wood on the island. Destroyed as settlers cut down the trees for firewood, used the bark for tanning, and allowed goats and other introduced animals to graze on the saplings. This made the area arid, and difficult to reforest. However, during this first phase of the project about 3,000 trees were planted (paid for mostly by Saints paying to paid a tree in their name) with a gatehouse and car park built. By 2012, about 35 hectares have been planted with 10,000 trees. Currently there are 6,000 gumwoods growing in the Millennium Forest. With an estimated 55,000 further plantings are required to cover the entire area designated for forest.
Please consider supporting this amazing project by donating to plant a tree. Can learn more about the Millennium Forest here 👉
Or contact Saint Helena National Trust to find how you can donate.

About Saint Helena: Saint Helena, a remote volcanic island in the South Atlantic Ocean, offers an extraordinary travel experience steeped in history, natural beauty, and a sense of adventure. As one of the most isolated inhabited islands in the world, getting to Saint Helena is part of the journey, making it a truly unique destination. The island is primarily accessed via a weekly flight from Johannesburg, South Africa, to the Saint Helena Airport, one of the worlds most challenging airports due to its remote location and windy conditions. This limited air connection underscores the islands remoteness and adds to its allure. Additionally, the RMS St Helena, a cargo-passenger ship, historically provided sea access to the island, but is now replaced by other periodic maritime connections, enhancing the sense of adventure for those who prefer the sea route. Jamestown, the capital of Saint Helena, is a charming and historic town nestled in a narrow valley. It is the starting point for exploring the islands rich history and natural wonders. The town is known for its well-preserved Georgian architecture, colorful buildings, and narrow streets that transport visitors back in time. A key highlight is Jacobs Ladder, a steep, 699-step staircase that offers breathtaking views of the town. [Source: wikipedia // Google]

Where is St Helena Island Island. One of the most isolated inhabited islands in the world
Where is St Helena Island. We are often asked this question and love telling the story. So we decided to make a short video showing where St Helena is, how to get there and why you want to go.
If you would like to find out more about St Helena, please subscribe to your channel as we have loads more for you to enjoy!
Measuring just 47 square miles or just 10 x 5 miles wide, it's located a little more than 1,200 miles from the coast of Africa, and 2 and half thousand miles from the South America. Home to around only 4-5 thousand friendly souls. With an estimated 20,000 or so Saints around the world. Saints is what people who come from St Helena are called. And that’s why we call yourselves The Saint Cooks.
We’re British citizens. As St Helena is one of the 14 British overseas territories around the world. It has been under British rule since 1658, having been discovered in 1502 by Joan da Nova for the portugese. He named the Island after Helena of Constaintinople.
Since 2017 you can now fly. From either Johannesburg or Cape Town in South Africa. It’s a morning flight taking around 6 hours to the Island, with a quick refuelling stop at Walvis Bay in Namibia. And then its a 4 hour return flight back to South Africa. Typically flights are every Saturday, and sometimes on Tuesdays depending on the travel season.
On St Helena You can go and visit the oldest, living land animal in the world!
Jonathan the tortoise! Who is officially he is 186 years old.
St Helena is probably best known because the french emperor Napoleon Bonaparte. He was exiled there after losting the Battle of Waterloo in 1815. He died on the Island in 1821. By all accounts he didn’t enjoy his time as a prisoner on the Island. The houses where he stayed at the Briars and Longwood are now excellent museums which you can visit. You can also visit Napoleon’s grave in Sane’s Valley, a spot he picked myself.
Some other fascinating things about St Helena are. It has one the most expensive coffee’s anywhere in the world. Can see unique tropical scenery unlike anywhere else. Lush and stunning on the inside. And wonderfully rocky on the edges.
It is renowned for its friendliness. We Saints are very friendly and welcoming. And we like to feed you!
Thanks for watching!
