Netherlands/Hidden places
Zaanse Schans is one of the most visited villages in the Netherlands, for good reason. Visitors associate Holland with its windmills, and Zaanse Schans has plenty of the historic windmills and houses, most completed in the late 1500s to the 1600s. At one time, Zaanse Schans had more than 500 windmills along its canals. Sadly, most of them are long gone.
While they’ve done a great job curating the village and the town as a modern day open air conservation area, they’ve also had to recreate many of the elements of Zaanse Schans to potray it as an ideal 19th century Dutch village. Nevertheless, it is a pleasant and picturesque town to explore. The best way to explore is on foot – though you can easily bike around or hop on a boat.
Many of the windmills here have been meticulously restored (and relocated) and are now in working condition, producing oil and paint. You can visit each of the five mills for a small fee. You can even climb to the top of the mills. Each of the windmills has a unique character. My favorite is De Gekroonde Poelenburg – it’s easy to spot because of its its vivid green painted walls.

| Netherlands tourist attractions | Zaandam |
Zaandam (Dutch pronunciation: [zaːnˈdɑm] (listen)) is a city in the province of North Holland, Netherlands. It is the main city of the municipality of Zaanstad, and received city rights in 1811. It is located on the river Zaan, just north of Amsterdam.
The statistical district Zaandam, which encompasses both the city and the surrounding countryside, has about 76,804 residents. Zaandam was a separate municipality until 1974, when it became a part of the new municipality of Zaanstad.
The history of Zaandam (formerly called Saenredam) and the surrounding Zaan River region (the Zaanstreek) is intimately tied to industry. In the Dutch Golden Age, Zaandam served as a large milling centre. Thousands of windmills powered saws that processed Scandinavian wood for the shipbuilding and paper industries. A statue that commemorates this industry was commissioned from sculptor Slavomir Miletić, and the statue, De houtwerker (The Woodworker), was installed on 20 June 2004.
Zaandam is historically linked with the whaling industry.
In 1697, Tsar Peter I of Russia spent some time in Zaandam, where he studied shipbuilding. He stayed in a little wooden house built in 1632, but was soon forced to leave because he attracted too much attention from the local population; he moved to Amsterdam, where he studied at one of the wharves of the Dutch East India Company. The wooden house he stayed was preserved and turned into a museum, the Czar Peter House. A statue honoring him was placed on the nearby Dam Square in 1911, and was declared a Rijksmonument.
In 1871, the impressionist painter Claude Monet lived in Zaandam for approximately half a year. During that time, he made 25 paintings of the area, including Houses on the Achterzaan, Bateaux en Hollande pres de Zaandam and A windmill at Zaandam.

Meet our locals - unfolding Maartje Hensen's hidden gems in The Netherlands
Recently we’ve hit the milestone of 100K followers 🎉 where we could not reach this magical number without the stories that you share with us literally everyday. To celebrate this special moment, we are bringing a number of Dutch content creators in front of the camera where they share their stories about the places in The Netherlands that have a special meaning for them.
Meet Maartje (@maartjehensen) who shares her story about the Amsterdam catchment area (Amsterdamse Waterleiding Duinen). Located to the south of Zuid-Kennemerland National Park, the Amsterdamse Waterleidingduinen make up a nature reserve that also helps supply drinking water for a great part of the province of North-Holland. It’s a great place for a walk, run or hike, but bicycles aren’t allowed in –helping to protect the dune landscape. Instead, a dedicated cycle path connects the park to the coastline. It’s not uncommon to see wild foxes romping through the underbrush and deer grazing in the dunes, as you can see 😉

The number of infections is high, many people are in isolation or quarantine at home. The number of corona patients is expected to increase as a result of these relaxations. Nevertheless, the cabinet has decided that, despite the risks and uncertainties, this major step can be taken responsibly. Because living even longer with measures that limit our daily lives also damages our health and society.
Wherever it is not possible to keep 1.5 meters away, it is recommended to wear a face mask, even outside. For example in busy shopping streets.
A permanent seat is mandatory in all public indoor spaces, such as catering, theater, cinemas and Horeca (Hotels, Restaurant, Cafe's)

Day Trips from Amsterdam: Waterland's 'Old Holland'
Endless green pastures, water dikes, picturesque canals, and charming towns... These are just some of the things you can find in the beautiful Dutch Countryside!
Dubbed as 'Old Holland', we explored some of the little towns up in the North of Amsterdam called Waterland area. It almost feels like travelling through time, as we saw some pretty historic monuments and buildings dated as early as the 13th century.
Special thanks to @Iamsterdam for making this trip possible with their 2-day regional travel tickets that made our travelling to and from Amsterdam area a breeze!

ZAANSE SCHANS, Netherlands | City of Windmills | 4K
Zaanse Schans is a small jewel of Holland, a village of 40 houses where time seems to have stopped. Located in the north-east of Amsterdam, on the bank of the Zaan river, it is famous for its mills, which for centuries have been used for many functions, such as moving water and grinding flour, to produce oil, cocoa, paper and even to break the stones that were used to build the current buildings in Amsterdam. Centuries ago hundreds of mills were present in this area but today there are only a dozen left, all functioning and open to the public, where in each of them you will find a person who will show you how it works and what the specific mill was used for!
If you are in the area, a visit is a must to be able to see for yourself how people lived centuries ago in Holland and understand why the mills have become one of its most famous symbols !!!
