Most underrated travel destination in Bosnia 🇧🇦⚜️ #bosna #travnik #cevapi #besttraveldestinations

TRAVNIK 🇧🇦

After traveling all around Bosnia, Travnik might just be our FAVORITE place 🫢 and here’s why 👇

1. Rich History: When Bosnia was a part of the Ottoman Empire, Travnik was used by the Ottoman Governors (Viziers) as their seat of power, giving it the nickname “the European Istanbul.” You can still see this history today, in Travnik’s well-preserved Ottoman architecture, ancient mosques, and fortress.

2. Natural Beauty: Nestled in a picturesque valley, Travnik offers stunning landscapes, including the Plava Voda Spring and Vlašić Mountain. Whether you're into hiking, skiing, or simply enjoying serene surroundings, Travnik has it all.

3. Last but not least… the FOOD: You NEED to try ćevapi at @hari, which was voted the BEST ćevabdzinica in all of Bosnia 😱🤤 and we can attest: we’ve had countless ćevapi and Hari’s is hands down the best we’ve ever had!

We loved Travnik because it really feels like an authentic Bosnian town, rather than overly touristic.

Are you adding Travnik to your travel bucket list?!

Platz Nr. 1️⃣ SARAJEVO

Sand Pyramids, Bosnia and Herzegovina

The sand pyramids are a rare phenomenon and a masterpiece of nature. Their shape and composition remind me of those in Colorado (USA), Dolomites (Italy) and Devil's Town (Serbia). The Sand pyramids are located only nine kilometres from Foča, near the main road to Sarajevo, in the village Daničići (Bosnia and Herzegovina). This unique geomorphological phenomenon was created in a long series of years. With the erosion of the soil and under the influence of aggressive frost compound, summer heat, rain and strong winds, interesting shape figures have been made. Sand pyramids were mentioned for the first time in the Austro-Hungarian period, and some claim they are over 200 years old. The erosion process lasts until today, so they do not disappear but grow up. Striated sand pillars arise from their broad foundations and narrow to the top, making outstanding geomorphological uniqueness in these areas.

The park was established in 1962, and is the largest and the earliest declared national park in Bosnia and Herzegovina.
Its declaration was based more on it being the site of historic battles rather than for conservation.
Perućica forest reserve, located within the national park, was established in 1952, as Natural reserve for scientific and educational purposes.
Perućica, which is one of the last two remaining primeval forests in Europe, is one of the five Strict Nature Reserves in Bosnia and Herzegovina.
The park is also famous as being the location of the Battle of the Sutjeska which lasted from 15 May to 16 June 1943 during World War II, where the Partisan were victorious over the German occupying forces in a battle.
In the battle, the Partisans were led by the Supreme Headquarters of Yugoslavia by Marshal Josip Broz Tito who foiled the enemy’s plans.
The Partisans were successful in breaking out of the encirclement
even though they lost one third of their men.
Several large Partisan’s Memorial stone monuments commemorate this event at the northern edge of the park at Tjentište,
on the way to primeval Perucica forest reserve.
The Piva and Drina rivers are largest rivers in the park, and they forming its north-western border.
The Sutjeska River could be considered main river basin largely located within park itself.
The Zelengora mountain hide in its forests and wide and grassy plateaus, 9 glacial lakes, also known as Eyes of the Mountain.
The park's vegetation comprises thick forests, mountain pastures, meadows and rocky ground above the forests.
In particular, the northwestern hill slopes have thick coniferous and beech trees up to an elevation of 1,600 metres,
while in the other directions, the hill slopes are very steep, barren and rocky.
Pastures are found at elevations above 1,600 metres in the plateaus.
Its floral wealth comprises 2,600 species of vascular plants (many of them rare and endemic) and also about 100 species of edible fungi.
The animal population is diverse and considerable.
Bear, chamois, boar, wolf, pine marten and mink marten, wild cat, fox, and wild goats have been sighted in the park, particularly in the Perućica forests.
The park has more than 300 species of birds in the large areas of lakes and wetlands.

Sand Pyramids near Foča / TOURIST ATTRACTION in Bosnia and Herzegovina / GIF VIDEO

Short GIF video
Bosnian Colorado: Fascinating Sand Pyramids
2 minutes to read
Ljiljana Krejic

Whether a water enthusiast who comes to experience the rafting on the Tara and Drina River or a passionate hiker and biker who opts for the National Park Sutjeska and Europe’s last jungle – Perućica, there is one more must-see place in this part of the Balkans. Although known as home of Bosnia's highest peak - Mt. Maglić and Mt. Zelengora, the most beautiful mountain of Bosnia & Herzegovina, this region hides also one intriguing natural wonder – Sand Pyramids. Looking more like a scenery from the Wild West than green Bosnia, these Sand Pyramids are a genuine masterpiece of nature. A rare and unique phenomenon, as well as nature reserve will unveil a totally unexpected side of this country. So, let’s discover together the fascinating Sand Pyramids also called Bosnian Colorado.
A rarely seen geo-morphological phenomenon
Located only nine kilometres from Foča, you will find the Sand Pyramids on the right side of the road to Sarajevo, in the village called Daničići. “Pješčane piramide”, as the locals call them, were formed of sandy clay through the process of erosion that took place over the centuries. Taken away by rain, wind, frost and summer heat, one part of the soil was eroded, while the stronger cliffs resisted. As a result of the partial erosion, a rarely seen geo-morphological phenomenon of interesting shapes was created. Rising from the broad foundations, these pyramid-shaped rocks become thinner towards the top, and some of them are up to 20 meters high. Actually, the process of erosion is still ongoing, so the Sand Pyramids are constantly reshaping and growing every day.
For the first time mentioned during the Austro-Hungarian rule over Bosnia & Herzegovina, the Sand Pyramids are probably more than 200 years old. Even the Austro-Hungarians were astonished by this extraordinary nature’s wonder and decided to preserve it. Being a rarity that can be found only in five other countries in the world, these sand dunes are reminiscent of the Colorado pyramids in the Garden of the Gods. Also, the Dolomites in Italy and the Devil’s Town in Serbia have something in common with this Bosnian Colorado. Being exceptionally attractive, this locality has been used as a shooting scene for two films -“Captain Lesi” in 1960 and “Winnetou” in 1963.
A masterpiece of nature
After a short detour from Foča and driving towards the village Daničići, where the Sand Pyramids are situated, the scenery will be quite typical for Bosnia – a rather rich mountainous environment complemented by the beautiful Drina and Tara Rivers. But once you arrive at the destination, this masterpiece of nature will suddenly emerge in front of your eyes. There will be no other tourists, just you and photogenic Bosnian Colorado. So, don’t forget to bring your camera. One thing is sure, you will be taken by surprise and asking yourself how these fascinating Sand Pyramids could be so well hidden in Europe’s last undiscovered gem.
