The highly fortified and historic town of Elvas is truly a hidden gem of Portugal. Located approximately 12 kilometers from the Spanish border and across the Guadiana River from Badajoz, Elvas was considered to be a strategic connection between Spain and Portugal in historic times. As a result, the town's defense grew in size and effectiveness. Elvas' unique star-shaped defensive walls, as well as several other similarly significant outlying forts, have been designated as UNESCO World Heritage Sites.

Exploring Portugal Spain Border | Day 5: You shall not pass!
On Day 5, I return to continue my Portugal-Spain border exploration, this time from Elvas to Albufeira do Abrilongo.
Came across a beautiful lake (Albufeira do Caia) with a trail along its edge and managed to connect it with the main track. Ended the day in Albufeira do Abrilongo, where I set up camp, not without getting through a slightly sketchy passage first. But it was worth it! The sunset was incredible, shifting from hidden sunlight to golden hues and ending in purple orange tones.
