Elburg: the perfect stop on a day trip from Amsterdam to Giethoorn?!?! Off the beaten path in Europe
Elburg, with over 600 monuments this is one of the most picturesque towns and well-kept secrets in The Netherlands. The town is located about 80km from Amsterdam, in the North-Western parth of the province of Gelderland. It's also not far from the popular tourist trap Giethoorn. Most international tourists would go to the latter. Therefore, I can easily recommend taking a stop in Elburg as it isn't overrun by international tourists yet. Let me show you another off the beaten path destination in one of the most beautiful countries in Europe, Elburg!

Elburg is a municipality and town by the Veluwemeer and Drontermeer. Elburg once was a small town living of fishing and trade located on the edge of the Zuiderzee. It is assumed that the city got its city rights between 1220 and 1271.
The town is located about 80km from Amsterdam, in the North-Western parth of the province of Gelderland. It's also a neighboring town of the most popular tourist trap Giethoorn.
Let me show you another off the beaten path destination in one of the most beautiful countries in Europe, Elburg!
Such a singing fishers choir is called a Shanty choir, it always consists of a group of volunteers. There are quite a lot of such groups in the Netherlands, normally performing in old fishing towns, often near the sea. they sing old sailors songs.

There is evidence of a Neolithic settlement at Elburg consisting of stone tools and pottery shards. From Roman times there are names and shards of earthenware which suggest that there was an army camp at the site of Elburg. The earliest extant written record of Elburg is from 796 AD.

Elburg is a municipality and a city in the province of Gelderland, Netherlands.
Did you know that the old centre of the Hanseatic town of Elburg is no larger than 250 by 350 metres? But the list of monuments and historic buildings in this town is long and it is surrounded by moats, earthworks and city wall remains.
What to do in Elburg?
While the town is small, there are many museums to visit. The 15th-century Agnietenconvent, or convent of St Agnes, is now home to Museum Elburg. This museum hosts both permanent and temporary exhibitions about the town’s history. The casemates, one of the oldest still-existing cannon cellars and the wall house where the poorest of Elburg’s citizens lived are part of Museum Elburg as well.
Elburg is a great place for lovers of water sports and nature. It is possible to take a trip on an original Botter, for instance, a type of traditional sailing ship that used to be used for fishing. At Veluwemeer lake you can also hire canoes and kayaks, go kitesurfing and windsurfing, and of course swim.

Wijk bij Duurstede is a beautiful historicy Dutch city in The Netherlands worth visiting! It's located less then 30km from Utrecht and only 65km from Amsterdam!
EXTRA TIP: grab a beer at the city brewery 'De Dikke' (The Fat). They have the best beers in town! Open thirsday - sunday.

I have visited six of them on one day (all near my hometown).
You can walk around most of the castles and some you can visit.
The first three (doorwerth, rosendael and vorden) are open to the public. The other ones (Hackfort, Ampsen and Wildenborch are private).

De hanzestad Elburg ligt mooi gelegen naast het meer.
Het vestigingsplaatsje zijn de oude stadsmuren nog goed te zien met de gracht er omheen.
Net buiten de poort is de haven met nog een paar boten van de bruine vloot.
De scheepswerf is er ook nog speelt een belangrijke rol om de vloot nog in stand te houden.
