The Netherlands is a small country in Europe that is known for its tulips, canals, windmills, and cheese. While these are all popular tourist destinations, there are also a number of other attractions in the Netherlands that are worth seeing.
Some of the best attractions in the Netherlands include the Anne Frank House, the Rijksmuseum, and the Keukenhof Gardens. The Anne Frank House is a museum dedicated to Anne Frank's life, a Jewish teenager who hid from the Nazis during World War II.
The Rijksmuseum is a large art museum that contains works by some of the most famous artists in history, such as Rembrandt and Vermeer. Most people think of things to do in Amsterdam, but the Netherland is so much more than just Amsterdam, the Keukenhof Gardens are a popular tourist destination because they are home to millions of tulips.
The Netherlands is also home to a number of interesting castles. The most famous castle in the Netherlands is the Burg Castle, which is located in the city of Groningen. Other notable castles in the Netherlands include the Muiderslot Castle, the Heidelberg Castle, and the Bourtange Fortress.
The history of the Netherlands is as diverse and colorful as its people. From prehistoric times to the present, their story has been one of constant change, with each era adding a new chapter in this nation's remarkable journey.
The earliest inhabitants date back 10,000 years ago when Neolithic tribes roamed what is now Holland. The area was then known as the Low Countries, a reference to its flat and fertile landscape.

The Dutch built a thriving economy based on shipping, trade, and colonization in the centuries that followed. They became one of the world's most prosperous nations, and their culture flourished. Stolphoevekerk, Burg. Kolfschotenplein 1. Not open to visitors. The oldest church in Volendam is the wooden Protestant Stolphoevekerk. This National Monument was built in 1658 in the shape of a farmhouse. The lovely little church is still in use.
St. Vincentiuskerk, Kerkepad 1. Open to visitors in the holiday season, otherwise during the weekend. The St. Vincentius church was opened in 1860, after protests from Roman-Catholic worshippers who had been forced for centuries to walk to Edam for their Sunday service.
De Visafslag, Haven 41, (info@devisafslagvolendam.nl),. Open for visits by appointment. The wooden fish auction was built in 1934, but is no longer in use. Now a National Monument, it remains a landmark today, even between the many other wooden houses.
Volendams Museum, Zeestraat 41, (info@volendamsmuseum.nl). 10AM-5PM, only during the holiday season. Historical museum, focusing on the period 1850 -1950, showing traditional costumes and interiors, as well as paintings and other works of art made by artists who visited Volendam. This lighthouse on the eastern end of the peninsula is one of the best known in the country. This 1839 structure is 16 meters high and is a National Monument. It can be seen from a long distance, and the site itself offers great views of the IJsselmeer.
Marker Museum In this small museum you can see a traditional Marken house as it would have been decorated in the old days. There's traditional clothing on display and a lot of information on the peninsula's history. Not all information is in English, though. The museum is only opened during the tourist season

Volendam is a town in the Netherlands, in the province of North Holland. It is well known for its traditional wooden houses, its fishing culture, and its Volendammer clothing.
Volendam was settled in the thirteenth century as a small fishing village. The name Volendam is derived from the Dutch words vollen (meaning full) and dam (meaning dam). This refers to the fact that the village was located at the mouth of a canal that was used to store water for fishing.
Volendam grew rapidly in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries as a result of its location on an important trade route between Amsterdam and Zaandam. The town became known for its traditional wooden houses, which were built to withstand the harsh winters in North Holland.
The fishing culture of Volendam also developed during this period. In the early twentieth century, Volendammers began to export their smoked fish around the world. Today, Volendam is still known for its smoked fish products, which include eel, herring, and salmon.
Volendam also has a long tradition of clothing. The Volendammer costume is a type of folk costume that is popular in the Netherlands. It consists of a long dress, a cape, and a hat or cap. The costume is typically worn by women on special occasions such as weddings and christenings.
The history of Volendam is closely tied to its traditions and culture. These traditions are still alive today and attract tourists from all over the world.

Volendam is a small town just north of Amsterdam counting only 22,000 inhabitants. Volendam was the location of the former harbor of the nearby Edam. Farmers and local fishermen settled there, forming the new community of Vollendam, which literally meant something like 'Filled dam'.
I highly recommend taken one day out of your Holland travel schedule and visit this mesmerizing place.
In the early part of the 20th century it became something of an artists' retreat, with both Picasso and Renoir spending time here. Volendam's traditional costume is one of the best known examples of ancient clothing (klederdracht) in the country. Only a handful of people wear it in their daily lives today, but as the locals have recognized its value for tourism you will probably still run into it here or there.

Amazing Things to Do in Marken in Holland & Top Marken Attractions
Discover with us the most amazing things to do in Marken & Top Marken attractions. Marken used to be a fishing village and belongs to the most charming places in the Netherlands especially thanks to its characteristic little wooden houses. Because of frequent floods, up until the 17th century the Dutch used to build their houses on artificially built hills, and then on stakes. You cannot find these houses anywhere else.
Today, thanks to the 32-kilometer long water engineering construction named The Afsluitdijk, which is located approximately only 1 hour from Marken, there are no more floods in the village. It belongs to the most popular tourist attractions in Holland and was built between 1927 and 1933.
Marken used to be an island and has become a peninsula thanks to 1,6 km long embankment completed in 1957. You can cross it by car, bicycle or on foot.
While walking through Marken, do not miss the “ Wave “ , which is a memorial commemorating the terrifying flood which hit the village in 1916. Another must-visit palce is a wooden Shoe Factory where you see how wooden clogs were and still are made. You can also buy a pair ☺
Do not miss 'Paard van Marken' Lighthouse, which means Horse of Marken. It was completed in 1839 and it still operating. Even though you cannot visit the interior, its white tower, red dome and breathtaking landscape are a dream of every photographer.

Edam - Our Favorite Day Trip From Amsterdam
The village of Edam is only about 30 minutes north of Amsterdam, so we decided to make the trip and see what there is to see! There was of course, CHEESE. Also a very cool museum, a fluffy cat and some amazing architecture.
We had a great day, and of course found some cheese to take home and maybe some for lunch as well!
