New Haven, CT - 10 fun things to do

Part college town, part foodie oasis, part artist’s sanctuary, part history-buff heaven - there’s something for everyone to discover in New Haven.
Yale University brings brick and ivy, along with more than 10,000 college and graduate students every year, to the city in its sprawling campus. The university also offers endless cultural opportunities. Yale’s Art Gallery hosts works by the likes of Wassily Kandinsky and Mark Rothko. Students from university’s drama school regularly host productions at the Yale Repertory Theater.
Off campus, New Haven offers its residents a plethora of dining and entertainment options. The birthplace of the hamburger and American-style pizza, properly called apizza, New Haven has a great variety of high-end dining and ethnic eateries. Enjoy nationally-recognized Spanish tapas at Olea or head to Little Italy near Wooster Square to try out the unique apizza for yourself. Taste of New Haven even offers several weekly restaurant and bar tours so you can get a little taste of everything New Haven has to offer.
Entertainment is in no short supply in New Haven, as well, with many arts, theater and music spots in the city. Artspace, a warehouse of mini-galleries, anchors the arts district in New Haven, but there are many other former warehouses that have become artists’ studios. Beyond student theater, the historic Shubert Theater has a robust history and once premiered many theatrical productions even before Broadway. And there’s Criterion Cinemas for both popular and independent films. New Haven has a vibrant alternative music scene, as well, with small venues regularly holding concerts in the city.
If history is your thing, you won’t need to walk much beyond the New Haven Green in the heart of the city. There are three churches open for viewing on the Green, including the Center Church where you can even tour the basement crypt which dates back to the early 1800s. The Beinecke Rare Book & Manuscript Library even houses an original Gutenberg Bible. Also on the Green are annual jazz and music festivals for everyone to enjoy.
The City and region are experiencing a surge in economic development. People are enjoying New Haven for its culture, restaurants and nigh life. This renaissance has spurred many new housing and shopping projects making the downtown a great place to live and work.

Fair Harbor Fire Island NY 🔥🏖 walking tour to Atlantic Ocean 🌊 from Great South Bay New York USA

Fair Harbor Fire Island NY 🔥🏖 walking tour to Atlantic Ocean 🌊 from Great South Bay New York USA 🇺🇸

The gorgeous harbor at the center of town is where residents gather for “Sixish” on the dock at sunset, enjoy a top notch dinner at Le Dock, grocery shop at Pioneer Market and cool off with an ice cream cone at Unfreindly’s. The bay front swim area and playground are always filled with happy noise and sandy kids.

A “Barefoot Community”, Fair Harbor is a laid back, informal, bustling community. The architecture is as varied as its residents, from humble 1940’s cottages to spacious modern homes. Many of New York’s professionals flock to this lovely, lively town. Whether with children or single, the residents are here for relaxation and fun.

The magnificent harbor view from the dock is the best on the island. Everyone gathers here in the evening for “Sixish” to toast the setting sun. Kids sell their wares while adults mingle and share a glass of wine. Fair Harbor is the perfect town for single professionals to meet and for families with kids who all like to run free.

It is easy to enjoy the outdoor lifestyle here. The lifeguarded bay beach is a gathering place for parents to relax and chat while the kids swim out to the raft or climb in the newly renovated playground.

Unfriendly’s ice cream store is nearby for refreshments when the going gets tough.

The Lifeguard-patrolled ocean beach is wide, sandy and clean. A pair of shoes is rarely spotted in this town.

The center of town is on the bay front with the Pioneer gourmet market, Unfriendly’s ice cream stand, Corliss General store, the Loading Dock liquor store, post office, and fire house. Events are held frequently at the fire house.

Le Dock restaurant on the bay front has a spectacular view and fine dining. Be sure to make reservations well ahead of time.

The first-rate volunteer fire department services Fair Harbor, Dunewood and Lonelyville, its close neighbors.

Although there are almost 400 homes, it is a closely knit community, with a strong and active membership in the Fair Harbor Community Association. They oversee the town services, including choosing the doctor, lifeguards, and maintaining the marina.

They sponsor the Annual Pine Walk Crafts Fair on the dock and bay front 4th of July weekend, which has grown into a major showcase for local artists.

How The World’s First Burger Was Made At Louis’ Lunch | Legendary Eats

We visited Louis’ Lunch in New Haven, Connecticut and interviewed the fourth generation owner Jeff Lassen about the history of the restaurant, the story behind the birth of the hamburger, and saw how they make it. We tried the burger out and asked customers how it compares to new, modern burgers.

Instead of buns, Louis' Lunch uses toasted sandwich bread. The burger patties are cooked to a medium-rare, no exceptions.

Every morning, Louis' Lunch's patties are freshly ground with a special blend of beef. As for customization, Louis' Lunch has a strict ordering policy: Absolutely no condiments.

Lassen says they still cook in the same original stoves that Louis' Lunch cooked in from day one.

The whole restaurant is covered in etchings because customers are encouraged to add on to the history at Louis' Lunch.

Lonelyville Fire Island NY 🔥🏖 walking tour Atlantic Ocean 🌊 beach to Great South Bay New York USA

Lonelyville Fire Island NY 🔥🏖 walking tour Atlantic Ocean 🌊 beach to Great South Bay New York USA 🇺🇸

This small town begins at the east end of Fair Harbor and is only a few blocks long. There are no commercial services here and the residents seem to like it that way. There isn’t much boardwalk here, and you get to your house on the sand. If you want a peaceful retreat, this is the town for you. Ferries are from Bay Shore and shopping is in Fair Harbor

Of the islands many pocket communities, Lonelyville is one of the oldest on Fire Island.

Founded in 1905 by the South Shore Realty Company, this secluded town is characterized by its two distinct areas.

On the Western side, many original 1930’s cottages are nestled between the narrow wooden boardwalks, shaded by the lush vegetation.

Some vestiges of the buildings existing during the fishing operations of Capt. Selah Clock in the 1880’s can still be found.

On the Eastern side, homes sprouted up during the 1960’s along the more modern cement walkways. Though different in architecture, the two sides are joined by a love of privacy, relaxation, and comfortable lifestyle.

Many who reside here are long-timers, who have had homes here for generations. They share their town happily with the intrepid renters and newcomers.

There are no stores, restaurants, bars, or any of the usual amenities found in neighboring towns.

Groceries are brought from Fair Harbor or the mainland, and carried or wagonned in.

What is sacrificed in convenience is more than made up in the serenity and beauty of this special community.

Ferry service is from Bay Shore, use Dunewood ferry

While it was a Category 2 hurricane off the coast of the Northeastern United States, the storm became the largest Atlantic hurricane on record as measured by diameter, with tropical-storm-force winds spanning 1,150 miles (1,850 km).

Long Island Kayak Tour of Huntington Bay (Lighthouse, Coindre Hall, Sand City, Beaches)

Here is our kayak tour around one of the coolest spots on Long Island, Huntington Bay and Harbor. Among the places you can visit are: the Huntington Harbor Lighthouse, which serves Huntington and Lloyd Harbor; the Chateau at Coindre Hall and the adjoining dog park, a former Gold Coast mansion; Sand City island and ruins, which provided sand for the sidewalks in New York City; the Lefferts Tide Mill, a historic gristmill; the Mill Cove Waterfowl Sanctuary, where you can bird watch, as well Gold Star Battalion, Crescent and Hobart beaches. Some of these places can be visited on a boat tour or by vehicle as well. If you are looking for a mostly beginner paddle throughout this beautiful Gold Coast area of New York and would like ideas on how to spend a few hours or even a whole day exploring this area, we hope to provide you with just that information. This is also a great area for stand-up paddle boarders and there is a place located right near Gold Star Battalion Beach that offers rentals.

Point o' Woods Fire Island NY 🔥🏖 walking tour from the Great South Bay New York USA 2021 4K video

Point O' Woods is a hamlet that consists of a private vacation retreat on Fire Island, New York, in Suffolk County. Although it resembles a village or small town, with services such as a ferry port, a general store, church and fire department, the private community is open exclusively to members and their guests, who are the only persons allowed in through the hamlet's gate, or allowed to use the private ferry that runs to Point O' Woods from Bay Shore on Long Island.

Point O Woods feels like another century, and residents here guard their privacy. This stunning community borders Ocean Bay Park on the west and a stretch of open National Seashore to the east. Ferries leave from Bay Shore

Best PIZZA in America | Frank Pepe's vs Sally's (New Haven, Connecticut)

Faris and Lisa road trip to New Haven, Connecticut, which is considered the pizza capital of the United States, in order to try the top rated pizzerias; Frank Pepe's and Sally's. TOP 10 Reasons why NEW HAVEN CONNECTICUT is the WORST city in the US!

New Haven, Connecticut is a horrible place to live. Let us tell you why..

New Haven is a coastal city on Long Island Sound, in Connecticut. It’s home to the Ivy League Yale University, founded in 1701. The institution’s museums include the Yale Peabody Museum of Natural History, the Yale University Art Gallery and the Yale Center for British Art. Grove Street Cemetery, dating from the late 18th century, has a 19th-century Egyptian Revival gateway. The New Haven Museum covers local history.

Sally's Apizza ( - As we arrived to Sally's Apizza, we met up with Ray and Colin, who really helped us in getting a table and showing us around the pizzeria, with special permission to film inside the kitchen and see the amazing pizza production, and the coal fire oven.

We tried three different types of pizzas, a white potato pizza, a straight tomato pie with anchovy, and a Ray created special that was called the Firebird that included chicken, pepperoni cups, and a variety of peppers. All three were totally different, and each had a unique taste. What stands out so much to me is how thin the crust is at Sally’s so unbelievably thin and cooked perfectly. And additionally I loved their tomato sauce, tart and sweet, and it was some of the most balanced tasting pizzas I’ve ever had.

Along with Zuppardi’s, Frank Pepe, and Modern Apizza (Watch the video here: Sally's Apizza is a must eat pizza restaurant when you’re in New Haven, Connecticut, and one of the best pizzerias in the United States.
