Maitland is a city in the Lower Hunter Valley of New South Wales, Australia and the seat of Maitland City Council, situated on the Hunter River approximately 166 kilometers by road north of Sydney and 35 km north-west of Newcastle.
It is on the New England Highway about 17 km from its start at Hexham.

- Visiting Troubridge Point Lighthouse and taking the South Coast Road east to Marion Bay and Dhilba Guuranda-Innes National Park, then turning northeast and joining the Yorke Highway (B86) at Warooka, continuing until turning north onto the Spencer Highway (B89) at Minlaton, then turning onto Upper Yorke Road at Maitland and heading to Kadina via Arthurton, then rejoining the Spencer Highway and continuing north until Port Pirie, stopping for supplies, then driving north on the Princes Highway (A1) until turning east onto Horrock's Pass Road (B56) at Winninowie into the Southern Flinders Ranges, staying overnight at Hancock's Lookout
AUSTRALIA, 2022:
One version of the The Big Lap - 19,000km clockwise around Australia in five weeks, this time in my 2011 Hyundai i30 - a diesel engine with amazing fuel economy and just enough room to sleep in the back.
Starting from home in Casterton in far west Victoria, heading through South Australia via Adelaide and the Flinders Ranges and across the Nullarbor to the south coast of Western Australia, past Perth and up the west coast, through the Pilbara and Kimberley, into the Northern Territory, across into outback Queensland and then to the coast at Ayr, south along the Great Dividing Range into New South Wales and down through the Blue Mountains to the south coast at Bermagui before heading through the Australian Alps into north eastern Victoria, across to Melbourne and back home to Casterton.
