Places to see in ( Carlisle - UK )

Places to see in ( Carlisle - UK )

Carlisle is a city and the county town of Cumbria. Historically in Cumberland, Carlisle is also the administrative centre of the City of Carlisle district in North West England. Carlisle is located at the confluence of the rivers Eden, Caldew and Petteril, 10 miles (16 km) south of the Scottish border. Carlisle is the largest settlement in the county of Cumbria, and serves as the administrative centre for both Carlisle City Council and Cumbria County Council.

Carlisle became an important military stronghold; Carlisle Castle, still relatively intact, was built in 1092 by William Rufus, and once served as a prison for Mary, Queen of Scots. The castle now houses the Duke of Lancaster's Regiment and the Border Regiment Museum. In the early 12th century, Henry I allowed the foundation of a priory in Carlisle. The town gained the status of a city when its diocese was formed in 1133, and the priory became Carlisle Cathedral.

The introduction of textile manufacture during the Industrial Revolution began a process of socioeconomic transformation in Carlisle, which developed into a densely populated mill town. This, combined with its strategic position, allowed for the development of Carlisle as an important railway town, with seven railway companies sharing Carlisle railway station.

Nicknamed the Great Border City, Carlisle today is the main cultural, commercial and industrial centre for north Cumbria. It is home to the main campuses of the University of Cumbria and a variety of museums and heritage centres. The former County Borough of Carlisle had held city status until the Local Government Act 1972 was enacted in 1974.

Nostell Priory and the unusual Obelisk Lodge, near Crofton, West Yorkshire, UK.

An impressive house with a nice deer park. The Obelisk Lodge is really impressive.

My comments about the National Trust relates to their attitude that photographers cannot take editorial photos of their properties and submit them to photo libraries for licensing, even when the photos have been taken from public footpaths. They use they status to bully photographers and agencies claiming photography for commercial gain is banned in their original t&c's, even though they relate to the early days of photography when photographers took photos on site and used dangerous chemicals in small trucks to process them on site.

Have you ever been to Crofton Park in South London, Street view ?

Crofton Park in South London, Street view

Crofton Park is a mainly residential suburb and electoral ward in the London Borough of Lewisham.

It is the original site of the former agricultural hamlet of Brockley. It is located 5.3 miles (8.5 km) south east of Charing Cross, and is south of Brockley and north of Honor Oak. Major points of interest include the Rivoli Ballroom, the Brockley Jack Theatre and the Arts and Crafts Gothic church of St Hilda.

Crofton Park Ward is bordered by Brockley and Ladywell Cemeteries to the north, and Garthorne Road Nature Reserve in the west with the London to Brighton railway running along the western boundary of the ward and a section of Ladywell Fields to the south east. The area also offers easy access to South East London Green Chain of walks. Nearby, between Honor Oak and Catford, is Blythe Hill Fields, one of a number of hills in south east London and which provide good views of Canary Wharf and the City of London.

CROFTON: Wakefield Parish #20 of 30

Usually a place that has a population of above 5,000 people would have more than the average settlement does when it comes to amenities, but in the case of this next village, it perhaps has way more than it needs and could potentially have enough for two villages! How many place do we come across that have an Academy secondary school, and a whole host of primary schools as well? Not many.

This one has simply got the works. As well as loads of educational institutions, there's an array of pubs, plenty of shops, and a health centre. Strangely though, there's no railway stations although historically it did have not one, but two, but both have now disappeared. The old railway lines in this part of West Yorkshire were abundant after all.

One of those lines had a rather large sidings here which, after the closure of the line, was redeveloped into a huge sports complex which now the local cricket and junior football teams call their home. Sport is a big par of life in this parish, and the Sidings Complex is not the only sporty area. If you head to the Community Centre, there's a football team that play there in the English Football League System - Nostell Miners Welfare.

Nostell Mine was a big thing in this area. It was the catalyst for places like The Lump to be built - an area of colliery housing which is now demolished due to subsidence (I particularly liked learning about the Leaning Chippy as well, which was also demolished). The Slipper was a pub that has now been converted into flats, and newer housing has replaced the old.

Lots to talk about on our long walk around the parish of CROFTON.

Aerial views of Crofton Pumping Station

Crofton Pumping station on the Kennet & Avon canal was built in the early 19th century to supply water to the summit level of the canal. Water is sourced from a nearby spring known as Wilton water and channelled to the pumping station. Here it was raised 40 feet at a rate of 1 ton of water per stroke by two massive Steam powered Beam engines. The water then flows naturally along a ¾ mile Leat to enter the canal at the summit level Lock 55 to the west. Nowadays electric pumps are used maintain the water levels, but the steam pumps are in full working order and operate on various Public open days throughout year.
