8 PHOENIX TRAVEL TIPS YOU NEED TO KNOW

Today we share these Phoenix travel tips, looking at how to get around Phoenix, what to pack for Phoenix and how to save money in Phoenix, so that you can travel Phoenix on a budget. We also look at getting around Phoenix (particularly getting around Phoenix without a car) and how to get to Phoenix Arizona. Plus, we share the cool things to do in Arizona, the best day trips in Phoenix, the best time to visit Phoenix and the best food in Phoenix Arizona. We share the things to know before you go to Phoenix in this Phoenix travel guide, so that you can have a great trip!

1. Best time to visit Phoenix

Firstly, let’s look at the best time to visit Phoenix. November through to April is the perfect time to visit Arizona because you can expect blue skies and cooler weather compared to the summer months.

January through to March is considered high season, avoid these months if you are travelling on a budget and book in advance if you decide to visit at this time.

2. How to get around Phoenix

The best way to get to Phoenix is by flying in Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport then rent a car to explore the city to the max.

3. Getting around Phoenix

Next, let’s look at how to get around Phoenix. The Valley has limited public transport apart from a light rail which runs from Northwest Phoenix through to the East Valley. There are some buses but these are predominately in residential areas. Instead, stick to driving or using Uber.

We highly recommend you rent a car at least for a few days, so you can drive out on some day trips - we will get to that later.

Alternatively, there is a bike sharing program that is becoming more popular, so this could be a great option to get around the city.

4. Save money in Phoenix

When planning your trip, you may be looking t ways to save some money in Phoenix. Plan a trip in the summer for huge savings on accommodation and rental cars, with some restaurants even offering summer specials too. Head to the smaller museums which are often free and enjoy the city parks in the Valley; these are all great free attractions.

5. Don’t miss the food in Phoenix

Phoenix is known for their steaks and Mexican food, so make sure you sample one whilst you are here. Head to The Stockyards for fantastic steaks or the Barrio Cafe for delicious Mexican dishes. Alternatively, you can head to Macayo’s; a restaurant that is said to have invented the chimichanga when the founder accidentally dropped a burrito in the fryer.
Foodies will also want to head to the Phoenix Ranch Market for tasty local specials.

6. Best things to do in Phoenix

Phoenix offers many things to do including the Camelback Mountains and the South Mountain Park. The city is also full of interesting museums such as the Musical Instrument Museum, the Pueblo Grande Museum and art lovers will enjoy the Heard Museum.

7. Day trips in Phoenix

Phoenix has a lot to offer but make sure you leave the city too. Head out to the Grand Canyon, Tucson, Tombstone and Sedona.

8. What to pack for Phoenix

Phoenix is known as the valley of the sun because is sees more than 300 days of sunshine every year/ The desert climate makes this a hot and dry place to visit; so bring a water bottle and keep drinking, bring sunglasses especially if you are driving and make sure to wear a hat to share your face and avoid sun stroke. Light layers are also essential, as are proper trainers for those mountain hikes.

AZ 387 North - Pinal Avenue - Through Casa Grande to AZ 87 near Coolidge

Most states follow a simple numbering convention for their state highways, borrowed from the federal US Highway and Interstate system. That is, some major routes through the state have child routes that take their last two digits from their parents. Arizona is no exception. Today we drive AZ 387, a child route - spur, in this case - of AZ 87, one of the oldest state highways in the system dating to the system’s creation in 1927. Highway 387 itself wasn’t established until 1946, when a new route using parts of reconstructed dirt roads was assigned a route number to act as a shortcut from AZ 87 in Chandler to AZ 187 just north of Casa Grande. Until this route was established, traffic heading for Casa Grande from the Phoenix area would have had to take the dirt roads through the reservation or use AZ 87 to AZ 187.

AZ 387 never traversed this route alone however, being multiplexed for it’s entire life with AZ 93. Not to be confused with US 93, AZ 93 was a long-running proposal by the state of Arizona to extend US 93 from it’s then southern terminus in Kingman to Nogales. Ultimately, the extension as a whole was a scrapped, with the only portion being accepted as part of US 93 running from Kingman to US 89 near Wickenburg. (After the decommissioning of US 89, US 93 was extended to US 60 in Wickenburg itself). Arizona’s long-running quest to have this route recognized however led to the demise of AZ 387, who’s designation was deleted in the late 1950s or early 1960s.

In the late 1960s, the need for a shorter route to the Casa Grande Ruins National Monument and the town of Coolidge was deemed necessary for Interstate 10 eastbound traffic. This led to the resurrection of the AZ 387 designation, this time on a new, almost exactly east/west running corridor from AZ 187 to AZ 87. This allowed ADOT to build only one interchange on I-10 to serve northern Casa Grande as well as Sacaton, Coolidge and the Monument, instead of having two different interchanges for two different highways. This weirdly designed interchange is still seen to this day where you must make an immediate right after the off-ramp for I-10 westbound to take AZ 387. It’s unclear wether AZ 387 replaced, was multiplexed with, or ended at AZ 187 in this incarnation.

AZ 187 - which was the very short lived original alignment for AZ 87 - originally ran from modern AZ 87 south to AZ via modern Pinal Ave. When AZ 387 was deleted in favor of AZ 93, so too was the AZ 187 multiplex with AZ 93. In late 1984, when the AZ 93 experiment was finally canceled, ADOT kept the former alignment via Pinal Ave in the system but instead of giving it back to AZ 187, it was rebadged as part of AZ 387. The only reason I can think they did this was to justify AZ 387 being an odd-numbered highway, thus needing to be a primarily north/south highway which, until that point, it was not. AZ 187 is now relegated to a five-mile long highway, serving the town of Sacaton as well as very recently being signed (along with it’s parent route) as a part of Alternative I-10 during times of heavy traffic or accidents on the Interstate.

Visiting Cousin Eddie’s in Coolidge, Kansas!

Adam the Woo's video:

While on my US 50 road trip, I stopped by Coolidge, Kansas. If you're a fan of National Lampoon's Vacation with Chevy Chase, you might remember the family stopped in Coolidge to visit Cousin Eddie. Obviously, the movie was fictional but Coolidge is a real place and in this video I talk about the town's relation to the movie and show was Coolidge is really like. And as a bonus I stop by the ghost town of Trail City just down the road as well as visiting the actual home of Cousin Eddie in the movie (which isn't in Coolidge). This was such a fun video to make!
