SICILIANI CREATIVI - Cosa vedere a Leonforte, in Sicilia - What to see in Leonforte, Sicily

ENGLISH - If you love small villages you must visit Leonforte, in Sicily. Founded in the 17th century by Prince Niccolò Placido Branciforti, it is a solemn, golden town perched on the slope of a hill, dominated by the imposing beauty of the Gran Fonte, a monumental trough built in the mid-1600s from where clear water flows continuously from 24 spouts of bronze. I recommend going there in the morning, when the sun makes the stones shine and the arches frame a panorama of high, turquoise skies. Or at sunset, which dyes it red gold.
Then go back up towards Piazza Margherita, built in a circular shape on the model of the Quattro Canti of Palermo. Visit Palazzo Branciforte, the Mother Church of San Giovanni Battista, the Gran Fonte and Porta Garibaldi, the Church of Santo Stefano.
Around Leonforte there is a splendid countryside where wheat, oil but above all niche products are produced such as broad broad bean (with which to prepare a tasty Sicilian broad bean macco) and PGI September peach (late) which I told you about a few reels ago . Ancient Leonforte is one of the many enchanted places in the Sicilian hinterland. How many things to discover in this part of Sicily.

Grocery Shopping in Carini Sicily: A Budget-Friendly Paradise

𝗪𝗲𝗹𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗲! Today, we’ll provide a firsthand look at the grocery shopping experience in Carini, Sicily, offering insights into the cost of living and the availability of fresh, local produce.

Sicily's captivating landscapes, steeped in history and vibrant culture, offer an enticing escape, whether you're considering a permanent relocation or an extended sabbatical. However, while the allure of island life is strong, evaluating the practicalities of daily living, particularly the cost of living, before making any significant decisions is crucial.

To provide a clearer picture of life in Sicily, we're sharing our experience shopping at Lidl in Carini, a popular grocery store chain across Europe and the U.S. While we frequent various local markets and vendors, Lidl remains one of our preferred choices for its diverse selection and convenience.

The shopping experience begins with securing a cart, which requires a coin deposit—50 cents or a €1 or €2 coin suffices. Although we are committed to supporting local businesses, such as fruit markets and fishmongers, Lidl offers a convenient alternative with its wide range of products, including a robust selection of locally sourced and seasonal items.

The store's bakery section stands out, with fresh bread and rolls baked daily, ensuring top quality. The intuitive self-service system, with clear signage, makes the shopping process efficient. We've found the quality of meat and seafood exceptional, with prices significantly lower than in the United States, which adds to the appeal of shopping here.

While we typically purchase fresh fish from local markets, Lidl's frozen section is a reliable option. It offers a variety of seafood, including octopus, salted cod, and whole fish. Their selection is impressive and caters to diverse culinary preferences.

As the holiday season approaches, Lidl has already stocked traditional treats like Panettone and Pandoro in various flavors, including the famous lemon cream. These festive offerings add to the store's appeal, making it a one-stop shop for everyday essentials and special occasions.

Bottled water is a household essential in Sicily, and we typically choose Sant'Anna, priced at approximately 57 cents for a 2-liter bottle. Lastly, the efficient checkout process and courteous staff ensure a pleasant shopping experience from start to finish.

After shopping, we return the cart to retrieve our coin, ready for the next visit. This shopping trip provided us with essential supplies and valuable insights into the cost of living in Sicily, helping us make informed decisions about our future in this Mediterranean paradise.

It's our first time in Sicily, Italy! We're exploring Sicily's capital city of Palermo and letting you know what we think. This is our first impressions of Palermo. We're finding the best things to do in the city.

We start things of in the neighbourhood of Politeama in front of the beautiful Teatro Politeama Garibaldi. We then make our way down the pedestrian shopping street of Via Maquada.

While there we stopped at a well known spot called Ke Palle to try their Arancina (fried rice balls).

We then continued walking where we came upon Quattro Canti (four corners), one of the most photographed places in Palermo. Afterwards we visit the outside of the Palermo Cathedral and the Royal Palace of Palermo or Norman Palace.

We pick things up the next day when we take the bus to the main beach in Palermo, Mondello. Things do not go as planned. We went on a Monday thinking it would be much quieter than the weekend, but the beach was absolutely packed and there was no space left and all the beach clubs were entirely sold out. We stop for a coffee and beer and then leave.

Back at our B&B in Palermo we give a quick tour. To book this B&B:

Afterwards we head back out into the city for an aperativo and have an Aperol spritz.

Our Dream Retirement In Carini Sicily Begins Soon: Villa Preview & Relocation Tips

𝗪𝗲𝗹𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗲! Today, we are pleased to share an update on our upcoming retirement relocation to Carini, Sicily. Our vision of life abroad is just 90 days away from becoming a reality. With much preparation already in place, we’re excited to embrace this new chapter.

▶️ 𝗩𝗶𝘀𝗶𝘁 𝗢𝘂𝗿 𝗪𝗲𝗯𝘀𝗶𝘁𝗲:
▶️ 𝗣𝗹𝗲𝗮𝘀𝗲 𝗦𝘂𝗯𝘀𝗰𝗿𝗶𝗯𝗲:

Our travel arrangements are set with Delta Airlines. We will depart from Dallas and connect in Atlanta before a direct flight to Rome. A brief final leg from Rome will bring us to Palermo, where we’ll be greeted by my brother and begin our transition to Carini.

Fortunately, we have secured a welcoming rental home in Carini. The property owner confirmed that it was fully prepared for our arrival, allowing for a seamless move-in experience.

▶️ Our pre-relocation checklist is progressing efficiently, and we are pleased to share the following updates:
• Social Security: Application has been completed, with the first payment expected in January.
• Medical Clearances: We have completed annual physicals, both with excellent results. Carol has one remaining routine follow-up scheduled in December.
• Tax Planning: After thorough discussions with our accountant to ensure confidence moving forward, we consulted Attorney Alfred Zappala in Catania. His specialized expertise has proven invaluable in clarifying the legal aspects of our move.
• Downsizing: To simplify our transition, we have thoughtfully downsized, redistributing meaningful items to family, and donating others to charity. Notably, our enthusiastic baker son will take over our cherished rosemary bush.

▶️ A few final tasks remain before our departure:
• Job Transition: Croce will give his employer a two-month notice to ensure a smooth handover of responsibilities.
• Notice of Departure: Written notice will be provided to finalize our move-out from our current residence.
• Utility Disconnection: Arrangements to cancel utilities will be made as we near our departure date.
• Currency Exchange: We closely monitor exchange rates to optimize our dollar-to-euro conversion.
• Flight Comfort: Forty-eight hours before departure, we’ll use seatguru.com to select the most comfortable seating options for our economy-class flight from Atlanta to Rome.

Our recent consultation with Attorney Zappala was exceptionally informative. He confirmed the steps needed to register our lease agreement and shared additional insights, making us even more eager to start this new adventure.

Sicilian Street Food in Palermo 🇮🇹 CRAZY Italian BBQ + HUGE Arancini in Sicily!!

In this episode, we’re in Sicily! Sicily is a massive island in the south of Italy, the largest island in the Mediterranean! Our first stop on our journey across this culturally rich island is the capital city, Palermo! The ancient city of Palermo is home to some amazing and unique foods, which we will be showing you in today’s video.

We start the day with Granita with a Brioche, a very typical Sicilian breakfast. We highly recommend trying the “Granita di caffe e panna” which is Coffee and Panna, and the “Granita ai frutti di bosco” which is a mixed berry with panna. The brioche was light and fluffy!

📍Caffetteria del Corso

Next, we venture into the Ballàro Market, the crowded and chaotic market in the heart of Palermo. We got to see all of the in-season produce from the agriculturally-rich Sicilian countryside. We also stopped at a street food stall serving all kinds of Sicilian street foods. We wanted to try their massive arancini, deep fried rice balls that are stuffed with ragu. This snack was so big, it could be considered a whole meal!

📍Mercado Ballàro

We still had more food in Palermo that we wanted to try, so we made our way to the Vucciria Market. We found a local bakery to pick up Sfincione, which is Sicilian pizza. What makes it different from other Italian pizza is the use of Sicilian ingredients like anchovies, strong cheese, onions and herbs. It’s also served on a rectangular crust. We sat down the market’s bar to eat the Sfincione and enjoy it with a glass of Italian beer.

📍Panificio Pietro Bonaccorso & Dadalia Osteria

Before taking an afternoon siesta, we had one more street food to try. We went to 'Nni Franco U'Vastiddaru for the famous Pani câ meusa. This is a veal spleen and lung sandwich, served street side. There was also cheese topped on the offal. The texture was good but unfortunately, the sandwich lacked any flavours.

📍’Nni Franco U'Vastiddaru

In the evening, we wanted to have a full Sicilian spread for dinner. We went to the traditional Osteria Al Ferro Di Cavallo. Their menu is full of Sicilian specialties, and we managed to pick out some dishes we wanted to try. We ordered “Pasta Sarde e finocchietto” (Sardine & Fennel pasta), “Pasta alla Norma” (Sicilian Pasta with eggplant, marinara, and basil), “Involtino di Carne” (Meat Roll), “Insalata Sicilian” (Sicilian Salad), the most amazing Cannolo for dessert and their house wine to drink.

📍Osteria Al Ferro Di Cavallo

Don’t worry, we have a lot MORE Sicilian street food to try in the next episode!!! Stay tuned and make sure you’re subscribed so that you never miss an episode from our Italian Food series! Thanks for watching Chopstick Travel!
