Can I catch a train to Gympie? You bet! From Roma Street Station, the Gympie North line takes a little over 3 hours.
Winding through the Sunshine Coast, past the Glasshouse Mountains, through farms, forests, and hills, the Gympie North line stops at all the Sunshine Coast stations, before continuing on to Yandina, Eumundi, Cooroy, Pomona, Cooran, Traveston, and finally Gympie North.
You don't need to book ahead, this is a standard Translink line. Although it only runs once or twice a day, so do _plan_ ahead.
The full trip is 8 translink zones and costs $16.27 off-peak ($20.34 on peak, or $29.50 if you're buying a paper ticket). It's worthwhile to pick up a Go Card from the counter for the reduced rates). Not bad for a regional holiday!

- Gubbi Gubbi is an Australian Aboriginal language formerly spoken by the indigenous peoples of the Sunshine Coast Region and Gympie Region, particularly the towns of Caloundra, Noosa Heads, Gympie and extending north towards Maryborough and south to Caboolture.

The Mary Valley Rattler runs on the winding old track from Gympie to Amamoor. The modern, straighter line bypasses Gympie, and only meets up for a short distance. The volunteers maintain the line and put on a wonderful day trip, which you can book online
