Join us as we take a road trip to this north Texas gem. Burkburnett is located just south of the famous Red River and about 15 miles north of Wichita Falls Texas. The town offers a load of history along with some friendly faces. Take the time to stroll around the downtown area to take in the sites. Be sure to check out the old depot too.
A little history about Burkburnett; Originally settled by ranchers as early as 1856, this community was known by some locals as Nesterville. By 1880, the town had a small store with a population of 132. From 1882 until 1903, a post office operated there under the designation Gilbert, named after the North Texas pioneer Mabel Gilbert. In 1906, a nearby wealthy rancher named Samuel Burk Burnett sold more than 16,000 acres (65 km²) of his land in northern Wichita County to a group of investors who were seeking to extend into the wheat-growing area of Western Oklahoma the Wichita Falls and Northwestern Railway, one of the Frank Kell/Joseph A. Kemp properties based in Wichita Falls.
Within Burnett’s former land near the railroad, lots were auctioned off the following year and a post office was established. The town was named @Burkburnett by U.S. President Theodore Roosevelt, who visited the area for a wolf hunt that was hosted by the wealthy rancher Burnett. In 1912, oil was discovered west of the town, attracting thousands to the area, and by 1918, about 20,000 people had settled around the oilfield. This part of the town's history was chronicled in the film, Boom Town with Clark Gable and Spencer Tracy. The Great Depression had a negative impact on the town’s population, which was boosted again in 1941 as @SheppardAirForceBase was established nearby.

During our road trip to Burk (as locals call it) and our hike around town, we talked about a couple of things, one of which was about Sheppard Air Force Base. You can read about Sheppard's history at
Another thing we talked about was the rock along the railroad tracks. While I was close to correct, there are a few variables involved as well. This is what I found; Track ballast forms the trackbed upon which railroad ties (sleepers) are laid.
It is packed between, below, and around the ties.
It is used to bear the load from the railroad ties, to facilitate drainage of water, and also to keep down vegetation that might interfere with the track structure.
This also serves to hold the track in place as the trains roll by.
It is typically made of crushed stone, although ballast has sometimes consisted of other, less suitable materials, for example burnt clay.
The term ballast comes from a nautical term for the stones used to stabilize a ship.

Lake Wichita Park is, per the Cities web site, 234 acres of tree covered splendor with both gravel and paved pathways. Located in the southwestern side of Wichita Falls off Fairway Ave. The park was once called Jaycee park. However, I have no clue when the City renamed the park. The park offers plenty of walking, jogging, bicycling and roller-blading opportunities. There is an 18-hole disk golf course as well as baseball and football fields along with an airstrip for radio controlled aircraft. The park is also an off-leash park for those desiring to walk their dogs without a leash. More information about the off-leash park can be found at There is a large pavilion that you may reserve for your get-togethers and/or birthday parties. Visit to find more information about the park. Fishing along the shores of Lake Wichita can also be enjoyed. There are plans in the works for the lake being dredged out soon and according to the Texas Parks and Wildlife, the lake is to be restocked with different varieties of fish once the lake project is complete. Wichita Falls Texas | Lucy Park
Lucy Park – Wichita Falls, TX
178 acres of park, located at 100 Sunset Dr (behind the City of Wichita Falls Central Services complex on 5th St.) in one of many of the Wichita rivers bends. The park offers a swimming pool, a 1.7 mile concrete trail, several picnic tables with grills at select sites, two large covered picnic areas for parties and get togethers (can be reserved), a log cabin (must be reserved), an 18 hole disc golf course, lots of trees, flowers and plants, as well as plenty of open area for kite flying and more. You can read more about Lucy park by visiting The park is well maintained and patrolled by local authorities. While the park is well lit, in my own opinion it is not advisable to hang out to long after dark. No reason really, just does not seem like a real safe place to be late at night. I believe all City parks close at midnight anyway :-) So anyway, get out, enjoy life and above all, go have an adventure!
