Melbourne Day Trips: Olinda Falls, Dandenong Ranges
With movement restrictions easing in Australia, it was time to get out of the house and get a taste of nature.
Olinda Falls is located in the Dandenong Ranges east of Melbourne, Victoria, Australia.
There are several walks in the national park, of varying degrees of strenuousness. The walk to the lower falls is strenuous, going down (and returning back up) and steep track. The track is likely to be muddy and slippery.
After visiting the falls, visit the townships of Olind, Kallista, and Sassafras.
Also nearby is Sherbrooke Forest and National Rhododendron Gardens.
There’s plenty to see and do.

George Tindale Memorial Gardens is part of an Aboriginal cultural landscape in the traditional Country of the Wurundjeri People. Parks Victoria respects the deep and continuing connection that Traditional Owners have to these lands and waters, and we recognise their ongoing role in caring for Country.
Set under the canopies of stunning Mountain Ash Trees, this cool climate garden is sure to delight. A charming, intimate oasis of magnolias, rhododendrons, camellias, azaleas, fuchsias and hydrangeas will be easily recognisable to the garden enthusiast.
With each season producing stunning new blooms and ever changing colours there is reason to visit year round. Ruth Tindale’s meticulous planning ensured that plants can be found flowering in the garden virtually every day of the year. Acquisition of the garden by George Tindale introduced a scientific and educational focus that reflected his interest in extending knowledge of horticulture.
Enjoy a stroll through the garden, stop for a picnic, take in the bird song and admire the sculptures on permanent display including two by Ruth Tindale, former garden owner.
Opening hours: George Tindale Memorial Garden is open 10:00 am to 5:00 pm every day except Christmas Day, days of Total Fire Ban, Severe Weather events and major works. Check current conditions on the day of your planned visit to confirm it is open.

Where to Find the Best Autumn Leaves in Melbourne and Victoria
In this video I will show you some of the best places to see the autumn colours in Melbourne and Victoria Australia. From the beautiful autumn colours of Alfred Nicholas Gardens at Mount Dandenong to the stunning Mt Macedon to the gorgeous autumn colours in Bright Victoria. Some of these places make for some of top day trips from Melbourne. The best time of year is around mid-April to mid-May although this can vary a bit depending on the year and the actual tree.
The first part of the video I show some of Melbourne’s best parks and gardens to find the autumn leaves. From the Fitzroy Gardens, Carlton Gardens all the way through Kings Domain and probably the best place to see these autumn colours in the Royal Botanic Gardens in Melbourne.
The colours get better outside of the city. One of the most popular places to see autumn leaves in Melbourne is at Mount Dandenong. They have amazing autumn colours. The best gardens to visit there are the Dandenong Ranges Botanic Gardens, Alfred Nicholas Memorial Gardens, CloudeHill Gardens and the George Tindale Memorial Gardens (Sherbrooke).
Mount Macedon is another place to see beautiful autumn leaves in Victoria and easy day trip from Melbourne. Here you can find the Avenue of Honour where the oak trees look amazing with their autumn leaves. Further up the mountain are some of Melbourne’s most beautiful gardens particular in autumn. The 1st are the Gardens of Tieve Tara, their autumn colours look so pretty around the lake. But for even more beautiful autumn leaves the Forest Glade Gardens must rate as one of the best places to see the colours in Australia.
Other great places to visit in autumn include Ballarat and Walhalla. But for me for the best autumn leaves in Victoria, Bright must be on your list. The whole town looks gorgeous with the autumn colours. At the end of April, annually they hold an autumn festival which is just a fantastic time to visit Bright.
