DUBLIN: Dalkey & Dalkey Island - A scenic & Historic town

Today we visited Dalkey and Dalkey Island in County Dublin.

Dalkey lies by the coast, between Dún Laoghaire and Killiney. Dalkey means thorn island and took its name from the Dalkey Island. It is just half an hour from the city of Dublin. It's one of our favorite spots in county Dublin.

Walking Dublin’s South Coast, part i (full episode Tracks & Trails)

Ross Lewis is an Irish Michelin star chef and proprietor of restaurant Chapter One. In this episode he takes to the urban Tracks and Trails, which meander along the coastal line of South Dublin.

Passing the Martello tower in Booterstown, Ross follows the railway line to Blackrock, where he stops to visit Heron and Grey, a small successful restaurant tucked away in Blackrock Market, one of Dublin’s oldest markets. He heads out towards the coast and picks up the seaside walk at Seapoint between Blackrock and Monkstown. Along the way he passes many of the Martello Towers which were originally defence forts built in the 1800’s and many have become meeting points for sea swimming.
Ross walks to Dun Laoghaire and on the way he passes through Glasthule to meet the owner Cavistons, a well-known fish shop founded in the 1940’s when Glasthule was a rural village. After sampling some oysters he travels on through Sandycove and yet another Martello tower which today is a James Joyce museum. Then onto the town of Dalkey passing Bullock Harbour, a very traditional fishing harbour, where boats still set out for their daily catch. Dalkey is one of the oldest towns in South Dublin, here Ross meets David McWilliams an economist, who grew up in Dalkey, who sets Ross straight on whether Dalkey is a town or a village!

Dublin Bay, Ireland | Photographer's #VLOG

'In pursuit of an image' on Bull Island, in Dublin Bay, Ireland. A peaceful, breathtaking place away from the maddening crowds of the capital's centre. A wonderful retreat to walk down the strand while the winds and the tides rule the air. The sounds of the rushes on the sand dunes dampen the lingering city of Dublin. Bull Island is a haven that is found on the Clontarf road. A stretch of strand that is long in each direction and wide to clear the mind of trouble. I find myself here along with images to explain its clarity that it offers to anyone who walks its lengths. The short video hopefully illustrates it's beauty and encourages the viewer to escape the city and find nature in the landscape.

DART Train in Bray IRELAND

PLEASE LIKE THIS VIDEO AND SUBSCRIBE TO MY CHANNEL
The Dublin Area Rapid Transit system (stylised as DART) is an electrified commuter rail railway network serving the coastline and city centre of Dublin. The service makes up the core of Dublin's suburban railway network, stretching from Greystones, County Wicklow, in the south to Howth and Malahide in north County Dublin. The DART serves 31 stations and consists of 53 kilometres of track, and carries in the region of 20 million passengers per year.
The DART system was established by Córas Iompair Éireann in 1984 to replace an ageing fleet of diesel-powered locomotives. Since 1987 the service is operated by Iarnród Éireann, Ireland's national rail operator. Contemporary rolling stock on the DART network is powered by 1500 V DC overhead lines and uses the Irish 1,600 mm gauge.
An extension and modernisation project branded as DART+, which is proposed to triple the electrified network in size, began design work in 2019.

Historical DUBLIN & WICKLOW | Power Court Waterfalls - One of the Highest in Ireland | 48hours trip

Historical DUBLIN & WICKLOW | Power Court Waterfalls - One of the Highest in Ireland | 48hours trip

Dublin (/ˈdʌblɪn/, locally /ˈdʊb-/; Irish: Baile Átha Cliath[11] [ˈbˠalʲə aːhə ˈclʲiə; ˌbʲlʲaː ˈclʲiə]) is the capital and largest city of Ireland.[12][13] Situated on a bay on the east coast, at the mouth of the River Liffey, it lies within the province of Leinster. It is bordered on the south by the Dublin Mountains, a part of the Wicklow Mountains range. It has an urban area population of 1,173,179,[7] while the population of the Dublin Region (formerly County Dublin) as of 2016 was 1,347,359.[14] The population of the Greater Dublin Area was 1,904,806 per the 2016 census.[15]

There is archaeological debate regarding precisely where Dublin was established by the Gaels in or before the 7th century AD.[16] Later expanded as a Viking settlement, the Kingdom of Dublin, the city became Ireland's principal settlement following the Norman invasion.[16] The city expanded rapidly from the 17th century and was briefly the second largest city in the British Empire after the Acts of Union in 1800. Following the partition of Ireland in 1922, Dublin became the capital of the Irish Free State, later renamed Ireland.

Dublin is an historical and contemporary centre for education, the arts, administration and industry. As of 2018 the city was listed by the Globalization and World Cities Research Network (GaWC) as a global city, with a ranking of Alpha minus, which places it amongst the top thirty cities in the world.

Wicklow (/ˈwɪkloʊ/ WIK-loh; Irish: Cill Mhantáin, meaning church of the toothless one) is the county town of County Wicklow in Ireland. It is located south of Dublin on the east coast of the island. According to the 2016 census, it has a population of 10,584. The town is to the east of the M11 route between Dublin and Wexford. It also has railway links to Dublin, Wexford, Arklow, and Rosslare Europort. There is also a commercial port for timber and textile imports. The River Vartry is the main river flowing through the town.

Powerscourt Waterfall, known in Irish as Eas Chonaill, lies at the base of the Glensoulan valley, a hanging valley, through which the River Dargle flows from its source on the southern slopes of Tonduff mountain, eventually falling into the steep corrie in which the waterfall lies.[2]

Several mountains surround the upper section of the Glensoulan valley in a horseshoe-shape, being: Maulin 570 metres (1,870 ft), Tonduff 642 metres (2,106 ft), War Hill 686 metres (2,251 ft), and Djouce 725 metres (2,379 ft).[2] The waterfall is bounded by Crone Woods on its northern section.

Drive through Ireland's longest tunnel. 4.5kms of Irish engineering, a whopping €752 million project

In this video we visit the Dublin Port Tunnel – 4.5 kms of Irish engineering. In fact, actually it was built by an Anglo Irish and Japanese consortium. It’s the 4th longest urban tunnel in Europe and by far the longest on the Island of Ireland. The Dublin Port Tunnel forms part of the M50 motorway, therefore if you’re arriving off one of the Ferries that dock at Dublin port, you’re likely to end up using this to head northward, or if you’re trying to avoid city traffic on an onward journey. Dublin is not an easy City to drive in after all, and this tunnel greatly simplifies getting out to the northern suburbs. The tunnel connects with Dublin’s M50 which is Ireland’s busiest motorway circling the northern, western and southern suburbs of Dublin in a C shape.

A lot of work goes into these videos. You can now buy me a pint as a means of appreciation for my work on Naked Ireland, no obligation, obviously - only if you can afford it... I appreciate it. Cheers.

It’s a twin bore tunnel, meaning that it is a duel carriageway. The tunnel boring was carried out by the European branch of Nishimatsu, Japan. What’s interesting is that the 2 tunnel boring machines used, which had to bore through limestone and clay, were given the Irish women’s names Meghan and Grainne. I’m sure the Meghan’s and Grainne’s of Ireland are all very flattered by that fact.

Work on the tunnel started in 2001, but had been in the planning since 1993. It opened to HGV traffic on the 20th Dec 2006 and to all traffic in Jan 2007. The project cost €752 million. Probably good value for such an ambitious engineering project. For the money there were certainly many benefits cited to this tunnel project:

- In the first place it takes just 6 mins to get from the port to M50.

- It has allegedly reduced the number of Heavy Goods Vehicles in the city, thereby aiding Dublin transport more generally,

- It has supposedly reduced traffic congestion and made the streets safer in residential areas.

- It has apparently reduced traffic noise and improved air pollution

- And It has made cycling more feasible in the city.

Now these are the great claims at least, and if they’re true then this tunnel is certainly a big success. If you live in Dublin then I’d be interested to hear if you agree that these benefits have indeed been forthcoming. Let me know what you think in the comments.

As far as Tolls are concerned – I guess someone ultimately must pay for the €752 million build cost and for the continual upkeep and staffing of this structure. And that would be us, the tunnel users. In discouraging commuters from using the tunnel, they must pay a toll, while HGV vehicles can use it free of charge. If you’re traveling to the far north of the country (Belfast, Derry, Letterkenny) by bus from central Dublin, you’ll also go via the tunnel, and for free.

The toll costs for us commuters is:

€10 between 6am and 10am Mon – Fri (heading Southbound) and…
€10 between 4pm – 7pm Mon – Fri (heading Northbound)
Outside these times it is €3

There’s a max speed of 80kph in the tunnel and there are 420 cameras located in the tunnel as part of its vehicle management system.
