The Vaal River | Parys | A View from Above
The Vaal River, South Africa's longest river after the Orange, is a key water source for the country.
Its source is at Klipkapstel in Mpumalanga from where it flows to Douglas in the Northern Cape. Here it meets the mighty Orange River, which flows west into the Atlantic Ocean at Alexander Bay.
The Vaal River, meaning 'drab' or 'dull' in Dutch because of its brown-grey colour, is divided into three catchment areas - the Upper Vaal, Middle Vaal and the Lower Vaal.
The Vaal Dam, near Vereeniging, has an 880km shoreline spanning 3 provinces, and is a favourite water sports playground offering canoeing, paddle-boating, power-boating, jet- skiing, and fishing, among other water sports.
The Upper Vaal is the Vaal River’s recreational hub. Centred on the towns of Vereeniging and Vanderbijlpark, expensive real estate and riverfront guesthouses line its banks, and you can enjoy everything from dining to fly fishing and Vaal River cruises.
This stretch of the river is exceptionally popular as a leisure destination, not least because the river is scenic and raftable all year round, except when it floods.
There are several hundred islands along the river, which help to create its white water rapids. The biggest and trickiest section of rapids is between Parys and Christiana, where rapids with names like 'Big Daddy' assure adrenalin-packed white water rafting.
The Middle Vaal, mainly an agricultural region, covers parts of the Free State and North West provinces, and the Lower Vaal comprises the area between the Bloemhof Dam and the confluence of the Vaal and Orange rivers at Douglas in the Northern Cape. (Credit -

How one Benelux travel agency uses ancillary services
When you hear ‘ancillary services’, you think ‘air travel extras’. But there’s so much more cross-selling potential to uncover. Take Munckhof Group's advice and focus on travelers, not guidelines.
Avila Beach Hotel Hotel Curacao
The heart of the Avila Beach Hotel is a beautiful Dutch Colonial style mansion, which today houses the lobby and various executive offices of the hotel. It is estimated that the original mansion was built at the end of the 18th century. During the British rule at the beginning of the 19th century, it became the residence of the British Governors and later on that of the Dutch. The original part of the complex was called La Belle Alliance. Another building of great historical importance on the Avila grounds is the cheerful seaside cupola known as the Octagon because of its octagonal shape. Around 1812, the sisters of the Venezuelan liberator Simon Bolivar lived at the Octagon during their years of exile from the Venezuelan independence war against Spain. Today this building is a much sought venue to host elegant wedding ceremonies and receptions.Since 1977 the hotel has been owned and operated by the Moller family. Presently, the daily operation of the hotel has passed from Nic Møller into the hands of daughter Tone Møller. Over the past 10 years, the complex has been thoroughly renovated and extended into a well-appointed modern hotel with an excellent international acclaim. Two exciting and luxurious wings were added, one on either side of the original buildings, stretching along two private beaches, which are divided by the Blues pier. The east wing, La Belle Alliance, was the first addition to the hotel, and its beautiful pastel-colored buildings have been designed to reflect the style and architecture of the historical Dutch Colonial mansion which houses the lobby. This wing houses the deluxe rooms and suites, all with balconies and ocean view and it combines modern conveniences and amenities with the charm of a bygone era.The west wing, called the BluesWing, is the latest addition and was built to a new and unique concept, created by Florida architect Dan C. Duckham. It is an all wooden structure, a first for a Curaçao hotel, and two stories high, housing 20

map of South Africa
South Africa, officially the Republic of South Africa (RSA), is the southernmost country in Africa. With over 60 million people, the country is the world's 23rd-most populous nation and covers an area of 1,221,037 square kilometres (471,445 square miles). South Africa has three capital cities: executive Pretoria, judicial Bloemfontein and legislative Cape Town. The largest city is Johannesburg. About 80% of South Africans are of Black African ancestry, divided among a variety of ethnic groups speaking different African languages. The remaining population consists of Africa's largest communities of European (White South Africans), Asian (Indian South Africans and Chinese South Africans), and Multiracial (Coloured South Africans) ancestry.
The RSA is bounded to the south by 2,798 kilometres (1,739 mi) of coastline of Southern Africa stretching along the South Atlantic and Indian Oceans; to the north by the neighbouring countries of Namibia, Botswana, and Zimbabwe; and to the east and northeast by Mozambique and Eswatini (former Swaziland); and it surrounds the enclaved country of Lesotho.[18] It is the southernmost country on the mainland of the Old World, and the most populous country located entirely south of the equator. South Africa is a biodiversity hotspot, with a diversity of unique biomes and plant and animal life.
South Africa is a multiethnic society encompassing a wide variety of cultures, languages, and religions. Its pluralistic makeup is reflected in the constitution's recognition of 11 official languages, the fourth-highest number in the world. According to the 2011 census, the two most spoken first languages are Zulu (22.7%) and Xhosa (16.0%). The two next ones are of European origin: Afrikaans (13.5%) developed from Dutch and serves as the first language of most Coloured and White South Africans; English (9.6%) reflects the legacy of British colonialism, and is commonly used in public and commercial life. The country is one of the few in Africa never to have had a coup d'état, and regular elections have been held for almost a century. However, the vast majority of black South Africans were not enfranchised until 1994.
During the 20th century, the black majority sought to claim more rights from the dominant white minority, which played a large role in the country's recent history and politics. The National Party imposed apartheid in 1948, institutionalising previous racial segregation. After a long and sometimes violent struggle by the African National Congress (ANC) and other anti-apartheid activists both inside and outside the country, the repeal of discriminatory laws began in the mid-1980s. Since 1994, all ethnic and linguistic groups have held political representation in the country's liberal democracy, which comprises a parliamentary republic and nine provinces. South Africa is often referred to as the rainbow nation to describe the country's multicultural diversity, especially in the wake of apartheid.
South Africa is an upper-middle power in international affairs; it maintains significant regional influence and is a member of both the Commonwealth of Nations and G20. It is a developing country, ranking 114th on the Human Development Index. It has been classified by the World Bank as a newly industrialised country, with the second-largest economy in Africa, and the 35th-largest in the world.] South Africa also has the most UNESCO World Heritage Sites in Africa. Since the end of apartheid, government accountability and quality of life have substantially improved in South Africa.] However, crime, poverty and inequality remain widespread, with about a quarter of the population unemployed and living on less than US$1.25 a day. South Africa is in southernmost Africa, with a coastline that stretches more than 2,500 km (1,553 mi) and along two oceans (the South Atlantic and the Indian). At 1,219,912 km2 (471,011 sq mi),[86] South Africa is the 24th-largest country in the world.[87] It is about the same size as Colombia, twice the size of France, three times as big as Japan, four times the size of Italy and five times the size of the United Kingdom.[88]
Mafadi in the Drakensberg at 3,450 m (11,320 ft) is the highest peak in South Africa. Excluding the Prince Edward Islands, the country lies between latitudes 22° and 35°S, and longitudes 16° and 33°E.
The interior of South Africa consists of a large, in most places almost flat, plateau with an altitude of between 1,000 m (3,300 ft) and 2,100 m (6,900 ft), highest in the east and sloping gently downwards towards the west and north, and slightly lso to the south and south-west.[89] This plateau is surrounded by the Great Escarpment[90] whose eastern, and highest, stretch is known as the Drakensberg.[ mapa de Sudafrica
