Poulaphouca Reservoir, officially Pollaphuca, is an active reservoir (for both water supply and electricity generation) and area of wild bird conservation in west County Wicklow, Ireland. It is also known locally as Blessington Lake. It is the largest artificial reservoir in Ireland by capacity and surface area. It was created between 1937 and 1947, with flooding beginning at 10 am on 3 March 1940 by damming the River Liffey at Poulaphouca as part of the Electricity Supply Board project to build a second hydroelectric station in Ireland, Ardnacrusha on the River Shannon being the first.

Ireland
Facts
Ireland is known for its wide expanses of lush, green fields. In fact, its nickname is the Emerald Isle.
But there are also large areas of rugged, rocky landscape. About 15,000 years ago,
Ireland was completely covered by thick glaciers.
The movement of these giant sheets of ice stripped the soil,
leaving huge tracts of flat, limestone pavement.
NATURE
The Irish have a great affection for nature and rural life.
The country's first coins even featured pictures of animals.
Low levels of development and pollution in Ireland have left most of the nation's open spaces relatively undisturbed.
Did you know that there are no wild snakes in Ireland?
The sea has stopped many animals common on mainland Europe from reaching the island.
There are also only two wild mouse species, one type of lizard, and just three kinds of amphibians.

Blessington Greenway
The Blessington Greenway walk links the historic town of Blessington with the Palladian mansion at Russborough House. The trail starts at Blessington and leads south along the shores of Blessington Lakes and through forest and natural woodland. The Greenway commences at Avon Ri Activity Centre at the southern end of the town and weaves its way along the shores, crosses an ancient medieval Ringfort, uses the footpath along part of the N81 before turning back into the forest at Burgage Moyle lane. It then crosses the Valleymount Road (R758) and makes its way to Russellstown Bay adjacent to Russborough House. Along the way you will have the opportunity to appreciate the magnificent scenery and wildlife in the area.

WICKLOW: Plenty of Fun - Blessington Lake & Russborough House
Today we will be visiting Blessington Lake and Russborough House in County Wicklow.
Blessington Lake is set in the mountains formed by the building of the Poulaphouca Dam and hydroelectric station.
The Poulaphouca reservoir is the largest man-made lake in Ireland.
When we went there was a food court with delicious food like pizza, churros, bbq and more, but remember that places like this usually only open during warmer months, I will leave you their website so you can plan your visit.
Also, there is a place to rent a bike or do other activities.
Russborough House was built in the mid-1700s. This house is considered a palladian jewel. Many people have referred to it as the most beautiful Georgian House in Ireland.

Blessington Lakes, Drone Aerial View 4K | blessington farms
On this 26km round trip you will get to experience one of Wicklow’s hidden gems. The drive surrounds the valley where the Kings river once met the river Liffey. In 1940 the valley was dammed at Poulaphouca and flooded to supply water for Dublin city. On this trip you will experience breathtaking views and enjoy a hidden part of Wicklow that is steeped in history and intrigue. This lake is very huge. Many Danger sign warns people not to swim in the lake. Because it’s an artificial lake and many accidents happened in earlier years. So, have to be careful. Few places available for boats hire in the Lake for families and fun. You visit those place in Blessington

Blessington lake Ireland
starry night
Blessington, County Wicklow, Ireland - Unravel Travel TV
Blessington is one of the biggest towns in West Wicklow. The town is a gateway to the Wicklow National Park, an outdoor paradise of woods, mountains, rivers and lakes. Beside the Blessington Lakes and the Wicklow Mountains, Blessington is steeped in history. Around every corner there are buildings, statues, and relics of the past. Some of the more noticeable features include the Credit Union House, Downshire Monument, Saint Mary's Church of Ireland, and the Horseshoe Arch, all of which are found in the centre of town.
Russborough House is situated 5 km south of Blessington. Built by the Leeson family, earls of Milltown, it became the home of philanthropist Sir Alfred Beit (1903--1994).
History: Blessington was originally called Munfine, and in the Medieval period was part of the lordship of Threecastles. In 1667, Michael Boyle (the younger), Archbishop of Dublin and Lord Chancellor of Ireland, bought the lordship of Threecastles, previously the property of the Cheevers for £1,000. Boyle received a Royal Charter to establish the town of Blessington, in the townland of Munfine, as a borough. Construction of Blessington House was begun in 1673 and afterwards St. Mary's Church in Blessington, which was completed in 1683. On Boyle's death in 1702 his son Murrough Boyle, 1st Viscount Blesington and Baron Boyle, inherited the Blessington estate. Murrough's son, Charles, died in 1732 without an heir and the estate was inherited by his sister Anne, then her son William Stewart, 1st Earl of Blessington and Baron Stewart. Stewart died in 1769 without an heir and the estate passed to Charles Dunbar, a great grandson of Murrough Boyle, who also died heirless in 1778, when the estate passed to Wills Hill of Hillsborough, County Down, a great great grandson of Michael Boyle and the first Marquess of Downshire. The Hills held the estate until 1908.
