In fact if you asked most people what they know about this state all they could probably tell you is that it's above South Dakota. That's about all I knew before we purposefully planned a trip there to take in some of the sights and sounds. So here are our top 5 things to do in North Dakota. Bismarck, North Dakota, is a small but mighty city with a long history. Located along the Missouri River, Bismarck played an important role in the Lewis and Clark Expedition. Today, the city is a great place to learn about Native American history, the state's geology, and the American West.
In August 2022, we visited Bismarck on our road trip to North Dakota. The city is amazing to visit with kids and has many family-friendly activities. While we spent a little more than a day in Bismarck, we enjoyed many of the city's sights and attractions.
If you're visiting Bismarck, be sure to check out the North Dakota State Capitol. This Art Deco building is a sight to behold, with its landmark skyscraper tower and stunning views of the city. Be sure to visit the Rough Rider Hall of Fame on the ground floor, which honors North Dakotans who have made significant contributions to the state.
After visiting the Capitol, head to downtown Bismarck to explore. Be sure to stop by Union Station, a historic railway station turned museum. Union Station offers a glimpse into Bismarck's railroad heritage and houses a variety of exhibits, including a model train display and a collection of Native American artifacts.
If you're interested in learning more about Native American culture, be sure to visit Chief Lookings Village. This interpretive site offers insights into the culture and heritage of the Mandan people, who have lived in the Bismarck area for centuries.
