Epic Road Trip - Day 26 - Devils Tower, Belle Fourche SD the center of the USA, Spearfish Canyon, SD
We left Buffalo, WY and headed towards our night stop in Spearfish, SD. We stopped at Devil's Tower and walked the 2.5 mile trail around the base of the tower. This place was a great National Park site and the visitor's center was very informative. We loved it here! It was nice to see all of the nature in the area while on the hike. We also stopped at Belle Fourche, SD to see the Geographic Center of the USA. Good place to stop for a bit. Please SUBSCRIBE and enjoy the video!

We had a lot of fun exploring the Tri-State Museum at the Center of the Nation in Belle Fourche, SD. Even with the wind and cold weather, it was still very interesting and at the low, low cost of FREE, it can't be beat!!

In this episode of Cheap Family Travel ( Nick Regan, Maggie, and Kate made a stop in Belle Fourche to stand in the center of the US. Belle Fourche South Dakota is the geographical center of the United States and home to the Black Hills Round-Up. The city of Belle Fourche established the tri-state museum that features antiques and memorabilia from a by-gone era. Adjacent to the museum is a park, including picnic tables, a large grass area, flags from all 50 states, and a monument marking the center of the United States. Belle Fourche is located in northern South Dakota in the Black Hills, just north of Spearfish Canyon. Cheap Family Travel enjoyed a nice picnic lunch and visiting this uniquely special place.

I'm standing at the geographic center of the United States and it's not where you might think!
For many years the center of the nation was located just outside of Lebanon, Kansas. But that all changed in 1959, with the additions of Alaska and Hawaii into the Union.
That moved the geographic center to Belle Fourche, South Dakota which is a surprisingly fun place to visit. I'm not kidding. In addition to the monument, there's a museum, an old gold rush era cabin and you can even play a round of frisbee golf!

Devils Tower National Monument Belle Fourche Campground in Devils Tower Wyoming provides primitive tent and RV camping adjacent to the famous landmark and within the grounds of the National Monument. Seasonally open the campsites are all on a first come first served basis. A scenic camping area with paved roads, gravel sites and grass tree surrounds each site has a picnic table and fire ring. Multiple restrooms are located throughout the area with running water and flush toilets (no showers). Each site is a pull thru site with plenty of room for even large RVs. There is decent separation between sites but no privacy.
The campground is immediately adjacent to a Prairie Dog Town with trails that get you close and cross through their habit. Bordered on two sides by the Belle Fouche River the campground is situated on a flat plan with large cottonwood trees. Belle Fourche Campground IS NOT near the visitor center complex (located on the opposite side of Devils Tower) but trails are available to hike there, a really good and hard hike.
During the peak summer season the campground fills often by about 3PM. Camphosts are located on site to aid and provide information. About 1 mile away just outside the entrance kiosk are private campgrounds and businesses providing food, supplies and showers.
