The Seychelles is an archipelago of 115 islands in the Indian Ocean off East Africa, known for its beaches, coral reefs, diving, nature reserves and rare wildlife such as giant Aldabra tortoises. Mahé island, with an international airport, is a key transport hub, home to capital Victoria, the mountain rainforests of Morne Seychellois National Park and white-sand beaches including Beau Vallon and Anse Takamaka.
Mahé is the largest island of the Seychelles, lying in the north east of the nation. The island was named after Bertrand-François Mahé de La Bourdonnais, a French governor of Mauritius.
Mahé's tallest peak is Morne Seychellois at 905 m (2,969 ft), which lies in the Morne Seychellois National Park. The northern and eastern parts of the island are home to much of the population and the Seychelles International Airport which opened in 1971. The southern and western parts have Baie Ternay Marine National Park, Port Launay Marine National Park, and University of Seychelles. The Sainte Anne Marine National Park lies offshore, as do Conception Island, Thérèse Island, Anonyme Island and Silhouette Island.
Mahé was first visited by the British in 1609 and not visited by Europeans again until Lazare Picault's expedition of 1742. In August 1801 a Royal Navy frigate HMS Sibylle captured the French frigate Chiffonne on the island. Mahé remained a French possession until 1812 when it became a British colony. It remained a colony until 1976 when Seychelles became an independent nation.

Here you can see my whole trip on these three beautiful islands, Mahe, Praslin and La Digue:
Night owls and enterprising tourists will find themselves at ease in the villas and hotels around the very long bay of Beau Vallon (3 km). A wide dream beach, the wide range of water sports and the proximity to the capital Victoria (only 4 km) reachable easily by bus, make this stretch of coast the most coveted holiday destination on Mahè. Nowhere else in the archipelago is there as much choice of water sports, fitness area, restaurants, bars and takeaways. Romantic is the sunset with the sun setting every evening behind the island of Silhouette (18 km away). Tourists staying in the nearby town of Bel Ombre flock here, usually little frequented due to the lack of beaches.
