National Parks of Montenegro:
Lovcen
The pride of the country and its historical heart, Mt. Lovcen is the first among many things to see in Montenegro. It rises from the Adriatic Sea like a giant wall, blocking early morning sun and because of its huge shadow, it is known to be the “black mountain” Montenegro is named by.
Drive up the Old Austro-Hungarian road from Kotor to reach the top of Lovcen will leave you breathless, as the view of Boka Bay and the open sea reveilles below you.
Do mind that driving this road yourself can be stressful as the road dates from the 19th century, and now, being protected by UNESCO, can’t be changed with size, so it is always better option to join a tour or take a taxi, as there is no public transport.
Durmitor
Among best places to visit in Montenegro, you cannot skip this nature oasis and the biggest national park of Montenegro – Durmitor!
An open-air spa if we can call it like that ourselves, covers 39.000ha. This mountain range has some of the most spectacular views, vast offer of hiking trails, 18 glacial lakes, 48 peaks among which, the highest is the famous Bobotov kuk (2523m – 8277 feet) – don’t miss out summiting it! Ski resort at Savin Kuk, horseback riding, Tara rafting and five breathtaking canyons - including most difficult and trilling canyon Nevidio, the deepest one in Europe and second deepest in the world – Tara River Canyon, are certainly some of the most beautiful and adrenaline packed highlights of Durmitor national park.
Prokletije
The “cursed mountains of Montenegro” will stay in your mind and your bones forever once you experience this wildness from a close perspective. What is known to be “the Alps of the Balkans” and the youngest National Park of Montenegro is yet to be discovered fully, due to its rough terrain and merciless vertical peaks, ripping the clouds.
This dramatic queen rises from wide meadows, it is cut with narrow river canyons and shaped by number of glacial lakes, owning the highest point of Montenegro called Zla Kolata (2534m – 8313 feet).
Among favorite things to do in Prokleije surely is Hridsko Lake - officially the highest elevated lake in Montenegro, located at 1970m (6463 feet) altitude, wrapped with pine forest and myths about its healing water that renews girl’s beauty and health. However, what stands to be the most beautiful is Visitorsko lake, with 150m (492 feet) lower position and unique “floating grass” island at its surface. Locals say this is where magic is made!
Skadar Lake
Dive into the calm wilderness!
Gaze upon the beauty of the biggest lake in the Balkans, rest on a swinging boat among hundreds of species of birds, see the traditional life of Montenegrins, unchanged for generations, learn about its history, religion, and taste some of best local home-made food and wine. All in one day!
Plenty of outdoor activities will help you connect with the nature, calm your mind with simplicity and away from all the city life buzz, starting with boat ride for birdwatching, fishing, swimming, kayaking, biking, hiking, and inevitable wine tasting.
Among almost 50 islands, the ones you shouldn’t miss are the ones with most important monasteries like Kom, Beška and St. Nicola at Vranjina Island.
Always follow up with locals to find the best viewpoints, hidden restaurants, boat ride, and if you are very lucky, you may see the biggest and most famous bird of this National Park – Dalmatian Pelican, whose wing span is 2m (around 79 inches)!
Bjelasica and Biogradska Gora NP
Nature overdose!
Whether you are looking for to escape from busy coastline in the summer and breathe fresh mountain air, go horseback riding, cycling, hiking or plan to visit this place in the winter for skiing, you will not make a mistake!
Kolasin may not have many things to do around the town itself, but it is excellent base to stay for exploring around, starting from Biogradska Gora National Park with its ancient forest and Biogradsko Lake, to discovering remote traditional villages, tasting delicious domestic cuisine, and hiking until you drop dead!
Bjelasica mountain is known for best skiing in Montenegro, with two ski slopes (1450 and 1600), and in the summer you can ride this ski lifts to get above 2000m (6561 feet) in order to enjoy tremendous views of the surrounding mountains without any effort. From the top you can take a walk to Katun Vrnjak and enjoy panoramic view of National Park and lakes of Bjelasica.
Besides horse trekking, an excellent way to see more of Bjelasica mountain range is to take a jeep safari tour and reach remote traditional villages katuns, take a swim at Pesica lake, and enjoy amazing panoramic views at Zekova Glava viewpoint (2117m – 6945 feet).

Serbian Highway - Аутопут А1 - Autoput A1
#serbia #highway #motorway
The A1 motorway (Serbian: Аутопут А1, romanized: Autoput A1) is a motorway in Serbia and at 588 kilometers (365 mi) it is the longest motorway in Serbia. It crosses the country from north to south, starting at the Horgoš border crossing with Hungary and ending at the Preševo border crossing with North Macedonia. As a part of the European route E75 and Pan-European corridor X, connecting 4 of 5 largest Serbian cities (Belgrade, Novi Sad, Niš and Subotica), it is the most vital part of the Serbian road network.
Route
Northern section
The northern section (Hungarian border – Subotica – Novi Sad – Belgrade) is 172 km long and was built between 1971 and 2013.
The first subsection of this section to be opened is the Belgrade (Batajnica) – Novi Sad stretch. It was built between 1971 and 1975, but only a single carriageway was constructed at the time. It is 56.3 km long, and it includes the Beška Bridge (2,205 m) on the Danube river, which is the longest bridge on the Serbian road network. The next to open was the section between Novi Sad and Feketić, in 1986, 44.7 km long. Again, only one carriageway was constructed. Due to the breakup of Yugoslavia and the UN sanctions, motorway construction temporarily came to a halt. The next section to open was Feketić – Horgoš (border with Hungary), 71 km long. It was opened in 1997, and once again only the one (right) carriageway was constructed. After the right carriageway of the highway was complete, the construction of the left carriageway could start. The left carriageway between Batajnica and Beška was completed in 2004, and at this stage there was 32.2 km of a full-profile motorway. Construction continued, and the 19.1 km section from Beška to Novi Sad was completed in 2006. The next two sections were Novi Sad – Sirig and Žednik – Bikovo, both of them 10 km long; they opened in 2009. The first 5.5 km of the Novi Sad bypass were completed in 2010. In 2011 most of the motorway was upgraded to full-profile, with the completion of the 93 km sections Bikovo – Horgoš (border with Hungary), Sirig – Žednik and the twin Beška bridge. Finally, the remaining 2.5 km of the Novi Sad bypass were completed, which marked the end of construction of the northern section of the A1 motorway.
The motorway enters Serbia in Bačka and passes by Subotica, Bačka Topola, Vrbas, Novi Sad, crosses the Danube and enters Srem, passes by Inđija and Stara Pazova and arrives to Batajnica, a suburb of Belgrade, where the Belgrade bypass. begins. This part of the A1 motorway passes through Vojvodina, which is part of the Pannonian Basin. This is very flat terrain and the motorway is surrounded by fields. In the Novi Sad area, the motorway features local-express lanes, in order to avoid congestion in both directions.
Belgrade city motorway
The Belgrade city motorway (Serbian: Аутопут кроз Београд / Autoput kroz Beograd) is a 29 km long urban highway, which connects the A3 motorway and the A1 motorway, passing by the Belgrade Nikola Tesla Airport, Zemun, Novi Beograd, Voždovac and ending at Bubanj Potok. It was constructed in the 1970s and, until the completion of the Belgrade bypass, it is the only motorway connection between the northern and southern parts of the A1 motorway. After the completion of the Belgrade bypass this motorway will turn into the city's main urban thoroughfare.
Belgrade bypass
Main article: Belgrade bypass
Part of Belgrade bypass from Batajnica to Bubanj Potok which is 47.3 km long is part of A1 motorway. Part from Batajnica to Sava bridge (23.8 km) is a full-profile motorway, while part from Sava bridge to Straževica tunnel (14.9 km) is a half-profile motorway. Construction of rest of this part of bypass started in 2019 and it is planned to be completed by the end of 2022.
Central section
Central section (Belgrade–Niš) is 210 km-long and is completed in 1985.
First section of this part of A1 motorway was opened in 1977, and it was 28.1 km long section Beograd (Bubanj Potok) – Umčari, which was opened with another 12.5 kilometers of motorway through Belgrade from Mostar interchange to Bubanj Potok. Next year 79.3 kilometers from Umčari to Batočina were opened. Motorway was simultaneously constructed from Belgrade and from Niš, so in 1980 21.2 kilometers between Pojate and Deligrad were opened. In 1982 sections Batočina – Ćuprija and Deligrad – Niš were opened, and there was in total 189 kilometers between Belgrade and Niš. Last section was opened in 1985 and it was last 21 km between Ćuprija and Pojate.
Motorway goes through hilly terrain southern of Belgrade and then, near Smederevo enters the valley of Great Morava and later South Morava, passes by Jagodina, Ćuprija, Paraćin and Aleksinac and enters a basin near of Niš. Few km southwards Trupale interchange with A4 motorway which goes north of Niš, then passes Pirot, and goes to border with Bulgaria, while A1 motorway goes south by Južna Morava river.

This data is from Wikipedia. They are probably not 100% accurate, but at least they give an insight into the concept of kebab. In a short visit to the Walter restaurant in Belgrade, I ate 10 kebabs with two scoops of cream, and onions of course. The taste is excellent. If you are in Belgrade, feel free to stop by because the service is excellent and the food is delicious. If you want a real ancient Serbian kebab, try it. Go to Stojšić Salaš on Beška Krčedin road. For now, in my opinion, there is the best kebab in Serbia. Certainly one of the best in the Balkans. You can see a video about the beautiful Stojšić Salaš on the following link:
Wikipedia…
Ćevapi (Cyrillic: ћевапи, pronounced [tɕeʋǎːpi]), ćevapčići (formal: diminutive; Cyrillic: ћевапчићи, pronounced [tɕeʋǎptʃitɕi]) is a grilled dish of minced meat found traditionally in the countries of southeast Europe (the Balkans). It is considered a national dish of Bosnia and Herzegovina and Serbia and is also common in Croatia, Montenegro, Kosovo, North Macedonia, and Slovenia.
Ćevapi has its origins in the Balkans before the Ottoman period[citation needed] and represents a regional specialty similar to the köfte kebab.
They are usually served in groups of five to ten pieces on a plate or in a flatbread (lepina or somun), often with chopped onions, sour cream, kajmak (milk cream), ajvar (relish), and salt.
Bosnian ćevapi are made from two types of minced beef meat, hand-mixed and formed with a funnel, while formed ćevapi are grilled. Serbian ćevapčići are made of beef, lamb, or pork, or a mixture.
The word ćevap is derived from the Turkish kebap. The word is sometimes used in conjunction with the common South Slavic diminutive ending -čići. Albanian: qebapa; Bulgarian: кебапчета, romanized: kebapcheta; Bosnian: ćevapi / ћевапи; Macedonian: ќебапчиња, romanized: kjebapčinja; Slovak: čevabčiči; Slovene: čevapčiči. The word ćevapi is plural; the singular form ćevap is rarely used, as a typical serving consists of several ćevapi.
During the Ottoman administration, hajduks (rebels, outlaws) made the hajdučki ćevap (hajduk ćevap), which was easy to make, out of pieces of meat and smoked lard on a skewer roasted over a fire. The recipe of the Leskovački ćevap (Leskovac ćevap), a local specialty of Serbia, was based on traditional pljeskavica (meat patty), formed as ćevap.
Leskovac has a long history of grill shops. In Belgrade, ćevapčići first came from Leskovac in the 1860s, into the kafana Rajić at the Great Marketplace (today Studentski Trg), from where they quickly spread across the city, and subsequently, the country. The industry quickly multiplied, as ćevapčići was the drinking public's favorite.
The ćevapčići were served at shops, known as ćevabdžija (pl. ćevabdžije). According to a 1927–28 study in Belgrade, people either ate in the restaurant or outside (on the kaldrma), often take-away. The shops served from early morning to 10 AM; often the dish was bought for breakfast.
Before the 1930s, they spread to the rest of Yugoslavia, including east of Serbia and the Macedonia region. By 1932, ćevapčići were regarded as a local specialty in southern Serbia, Skopje, and Peć. In 1933, the first street food vendor appeared in Maribor, Slovenia, who came from Leskovac, and served grilled meat, including ćevapčići. In 1940, ten pieces cost one Yugoslav dinar. In the second half of the 20th century, ćevapčići and other Oriental dishes entered Croatian cuisine. The Leskovac-styled grilled meat, including ćevapčići, has today become part of the everyday diet in Slovenia. Today, ćevapčići are found outside former Yugoslavia in the diaspora communities.
Today, the grill shops are known as ćevabdžinica (pl. ćevabdžinice).
Leskovac organizes an annual grill festival, the Leskovac Grill Festival, as a showcase of ćevapi and other grilled meat.
