Places to see in ( Avola - Italy ) Cavagrande del Cassibile
Places to see in ( Avola - Italy ) Cavagrande del Cassibile
For those who love nature, breathtaking views and perhaps a bit 'of trekking, it is certainly recommended a visit to Cavagrande del Cassibile . It is a nature reserve , over 2700 hectares wide and that is centered around the suggestive canyon formed by the river Cassibile. This natural quarry is about 10 km long and surrounded by steep rock walls, high in some points up to 300 m. Cavagrande is located a few kilometers from the town of Avola , south of Syracuse and the main access point is the road that climbs towards ancient Avola, destroyed by the earthquake of 1693.
Even if you do not want to take long hikes in the wild you will be able to enjoy marvelous panoramic views of the province of Syracuse, to get to the sea or to look out over the steep walls of the quarry to observe the small lakes from above.and the sinuous lines of the Cassibile river. The nature reserve is rich in vegetation. In spring it is wonderfully dotted with colorful flowers including many spontaneous orchids. During the hot months, however, a bath in the lakes is a pleasant refreshment. The area also has several archaeological remains such as the suggestive Grotta dei Briganti, used in past centuries or the prehistoric necropolis of Cassibile, at the mouth of the quarry. There are many paths of varying degrees of difficulty to visit Cavagrande. For occasional visitors, however, we suggest you opt for the panoramic Scala cruci path that leads down from the viewpoint to the lakes.
There is no public transport linking Cavagrande with Avola or other Sicilian towns. It is therefore necessary to arrive on the spot with own means or to join an organized tour. The most evocative point for the visit of Cavagrande is the belvedere of ancient Avola, from which we also depart the path Scala cruci that allows you to reach the famous lakes of Avola and their small waterfalls.
To reach Cavagrande from the north (Syracuse) or from the south (Ragusa), take the Siracusa-Gela motorway (in operation until Rosolini) and exit at the Avola junction. Once there, take the SS115 in the direction of Avola. Before entering the town, a roundabout leads to the Avola ring road. Turn right at the roundabout (first exit) and continue until you come to a tunnel-underpass. Here turn right without entering the tunnel and start following the signs for Cavagrande del Cassibile. When you reach the traffic light, turn right again and merge onto the SP4. Follow the road for several kilometers climbing in a suggestive landscape made of panoramic hairpin bends and dry stone walls. Finally, another sign Cavagrande / Laghetti di Avola
Although continuously maintained, the trail has a fairly high slope and can be difficult for untrained people, especially in the summer heat. Evaluate the difficulties well before starting the descent. To access the path you need closed shoes (gymnastics, trekking, etc.). The path is about 1700 m long and allows you to reach the beautiful lakes of Avola , formed by the cool waters of the river Cassibile. It is possible to swim in the clear waters of the ponds and cool off in the splendid waterfalls.
( Avola - Italy ) is well know as a tourist destination because of the variety of places you can enjoy while you are visiting Avola . Through a series of videos we will try to show you recommended places to visit in Avola - Italy

Places to see in ( Avola - Italy )
Places to see in ( Avola - Italy )
An Ionian seaside town, Avola is a mix of old and new. The town focuses heavily on the sea, with its history as a tuna fishing port. Today, the remains of the Vecchia Tonnara at the wharf are a stone backdrop to the sandy beaches. Avola dates back to a pre-Greek people called the Sicani. The Greek colony here was established in the 8th century BC, then the Romans arrived in 227 BC.
Modern Avola retains some characteristic corners and hopping palm-lined piazzas. Restaurants, cafes, and pastry shops provide regional treats, and there is no lack of shops and services. The town's name is famous because of the wine dubbed after it - Nero d'Avola, a hearty red variety exported around the world. There are also almond groves, citrus farms and vegetable cultivation here. The town has a penchant for festivals, especially food feasts. There is a sagra celebrating almonds, one for swordfish, and one for cinghiale (wild boar) every year, plus a summer line-up of concerts and parties. There is also a Sagra del Vecchio Mare held at the old tuna fishing wharf to pay homage to the town's past and what had been the lifeblood industry of tuna fishing.
Don't miss the Antico Borgo, the old town, with its charming streets and stone buildings. The Teatro Comunale is a point of pride for the people, an opulent opera house bedecked with boxes and lined with velvet, its construction signaled a rise in the city's prosperity and cultural status. The Vecchio Mercato is where the daily fresh market was held, in a beautiful colonnaded cloister of what had been a Benedictine monastery. There are a couple of communal parks to enjoy, too: The Villa Comunale and the Parco della Rimembranze bring a cooling splash of green to the stone streets.
Nearby is the Riserva Naturale di Cava Grande del Cassibile (a long name for a nature reserve!) that is also called the Grand Canyon of Sicily because of its deep river gorge. Reaching down 250 meters (820 feet), there are rock basins that fill with water providing cooling swimming holes secluded away in the deep crevices of the gorge. The area has an array of orchids to enjoy, too.
But of course, much of the lure of Avola is the sea and the wide beaches. The Ionian coast here is transparent and the long sandy expanses are great for kids. Along the waterfront is a long pier that juts out into the sea, a preferred spot for a romantic stroll.
( Avola - Italy ) is well know as a tourist destination because of the variety of places you can enjoy while you are visiting Avola . Through a series of videos we will try to show you recommended places to visit in Avola - Italy
