Visiting Šakiai district, Lithuania | Road trip guide
It's time for Šakiai - finally the other side of the wonderful Panemuniai road trip. Somehow I managed to drive many times through Jurbarkas side, but this was my first time dedicating a trip to Šakiai side of Panemuniai Regional Park and it did not disappoint. Tall Sudargas hill forts, several manor houses, river street, local winery and more can be found there.
Zypliai manor house and Zanavykai museum were yet another great highlight of the trip, with an interesting restaurant too which I will definitely come back one day!

Zypliai Manor
Manor houses built in Neo-Baroque style – a rare enough phenomenon in Lithuania. One of the most expressive examples is Zypliai Manor House. In the second half of the 19th century, the Classicism style Manor House, built by the nobleman Jonas Bartkovskis, became the property of the count Tomas Potockis, who in 1898-1901 expanded the Manor House and re-built in Neo-Baroque forms.

Wooden residential houses of minor manors, historically abundant, took over some forms of Classicism, after this style period has developed. Many of those wooden mansions allowed to be deteriorated, unlike the same purpose brick houses, the majority of which have survived into our days. Therefore, today it is increasingly difficult to find representatives of that style with a healthy appearance. On the picturesque bank of the river Nemunas, Jonas Grinevičius, the owner of Ilguva Manor built a small wooden mansion in 1790.

Church Of The Discovery Of The Holy Cross In Kudirkos Naumiestis
The present Baroque building of Kudirkos Naumiestis church was built in 1781-1783 by the Carmelite monks, who had come to this land more than one hundred years before. At that time, that house of prayer did not have any towers – they were under construction for many more years. Although it is thought that the verticals of the church were ultimately completed just in 1870, the documents survived provide evidence that Frederick William IV of Prussia, who travelled here in 1842, having seen the high towers of the Catholic temple in the town of Naumiestis.

Lukšiai Church
The project of a new brick church of Lukšiai was drawn up even in 1862 by Leopold Salkowski, the architect of Kalvarija County. True, the construction of this church started almost a decade later and in 1877 it was finally completed and consecrated. The church was damaged during the First World War: the tower was ruined completely, still a lower version of it was restored in a decade or so. The church stands out among similar single-tower churches, built in Neo-Gothic style, by its white colour. Lukšiai church, first of all, gives an impression of impetuousness, created due to arrangement of volumes, composition of pointed-arch niches and pinnacles abundantly used.

Taurage Places and activities Lithuania
In the southwest of Lithuania, on the Jūra river bank, nearby the road Kaliningrad -- Riga, for several centuries there exists a town that has been beautifully named by our ancestry TAURAGĖ.
The name Tauragė consists of two words Tauras (from Lithuanian → Taurus) and ragas (from Lithuanian → horn).
Tauragė town first was mentioned in the written sources only in the XVI century but actually the town was found earlier. Historically Tauragė was a hotbed of two different ethnical, religious, political worlds. Sometimes this country had to be a wall dividing these two worlds, and sometimes, contrarily, a bridge, connecting tem. Therefore, Tauragė, quasi a little pine nearby a huge road, had acquired its own character and peculiar, unique colour.
