5. Visit Europa Point Europa Point is the southernmost point of Gibraltar and offers spectacular views of the Strait of Gibraltar and the African coast. The point is home to several historic landmarks, including the Trinity Lighthouse, the Ibrahim-al-Ibrahim Mosque, and the Shrine of Our Lady of Europe. Visitors can also see the remains of a 14th-century Moorish castle and enjoy the beautiful botanical gardens.
In addition to its historic landmarks and beautiful botanical gardens, Europa Point is also a popular spot for watching migratory birds. The point is located at the southernmost tip of Gibraltar, making it a strategic location for birdwatching enthusiasts. Visitors can observe a wide range of bird species, including raptors, waterfowl, and seabirds, as they pass through the region on their migratory journeys.
4. Explore the Moorish Castle The Moorish Castle is a medieval fortress built by the Moors in the 8th century, and later expanded by the Spanish and the British. The castle features a tower, a courtyard, and several defensive walls and towers, as well as a museum that displays artifacts and exhibits related to the history of Gibraltar. Visitors can also enjoy panoramic views of the city and the sea from the castle's ramparts.
In addition to its historical significance, the Moorish Castle also has several legends associated with it. One such legend is that of the famous Moorish princess, Zaynab, who is said to have been imprisoned in the castle by her own father. According to the legend, Zaynab escaped from the castle by using a rope made of her own hair, and eventually found refuge in the nearby town of San Roque.
3. Visit the Gibraltar Museum The Gibraltar Museum is a small but fascinating museum that showcases the rich history and culture of Gibraltar, from prehistoric times to the present day. The museum features interactive exhibits, artifacts, and displays that cover topics such as geology, archaeology, natural history, and the military history of Gibraltar. Visitors can also see the remains of a Neanderthal skull and learn about the Great Siege of Gibraltar.
One of the highlights of the Gibraltar Museum is the exhibit on the prehistoric period, which includes displays on the first human settlers in Gibraltar, the Neanderthals. Visitors can see the remains of a Neanderthal skull that was discovered in Gibraltar in the 1840s, providing evidence of early human habitation in the area.
2. Take a Boat Tour to see the Pillars of Hercules The Pillars of Hercules is a legendary rock formation that marks the entrance to the Mediterranean Sea. According to ancient mythology, these two massive pillars were created by the Greek hero Hercules, who pushed apart the mountains to create a passage between the Atlantic and the Mediterranean. Visitors can take a boat tour to see these impressive natural landmarks and learn about their history and significance.
In addition to their mythical significance, the Pillars of Hercules hold a significant historical and cultural importance. The ancient Greeks believed that beyond the pillars lay the unknown and unexplored world, which was both fascinating and terrifying. Many explorers and adventurers, including the famous Phoenician navigator and explorer, sailed beyond the pillars to discover new lands and civilizations. Today, the pillars are a symbol of strength and endurance, and they continue to inspire people from all over the world. Visitors can also enjoy the beautiful coastline and marine life while on a boat tour to the Pillars of Hercules.
1.Go Shopping on Main Street Main Street is the bustling commercial center of Gibraltar, lined with shops, boutiques, cafes, and restaurants. Visitors can shop for souvenirs, clothing, jewelry, and other items, and sample local delicacies such as Gibraltar's famous fish and chips or its signature drink, a gin and tonic made with locally distilled gin. The street is also home to several historic buildings, including the Governor's Residence and the Parliament House.
Apart from shopping and dining, Main Street offers visitors an opportunity to immerse themselves in the vibrant culture and history of Gibraltar. The street is home to several beautiful colonial-era buildings, such as the Convent, which was once the residence of the Governor of Gibraltar, and the Grand Casemates Square, a popular meeting place and venue for cultural events and performances. GIBRALTAR | The Best Day Trip From Malaga, Spain
Gibraltar is a British territory, a 2 hour drive from Malaga, Spain. Gibraltar is famous for its military forts hidden within the Rock of Gibraltar, a nearly 1,400 ft tall limestone ridge jutting up from the Mediterranean sea. After going through border control and getting our passports stamped, we ate a full english breakfast and hiked to the top of The Rock. Inside GIBRALTAR: Strange British Territory in Spain🇬🇧🇪🇸
Johnny Harris geography: I traveled to Gibraltrar, in search of Bald and Bankrupt..Gibraltar is a British overseas territory in the Iberian Peninsula that borders Spain. Its geopolitical past and present and position as one of the world's richest places is what makes it unique place worth visiting. The people don't identify as British nor Spanish, they identify as Gibraltarian.. So that begs the question.. How similar to Great Britian is it? Brexit has also been an ongoing issue the last few years. Sir George Rooke captured Gibraltar for the British during the War of the Spanish Succession, and Spain formally ceded it to Britain in 1713 with the signing of the Treaty of Ultrecht. Why YOU SHOULD Visit Gibraltar!
What's it like in Gibraltar? Join me on a Tour of Gibraltar on Spain’s southern coast, a region well known for its towering rock and fascinating military history. The British Overseas Territory situated at the end of the Iberian Peninsula is dominated by the Rock of Gibraltar, famous for it's siege tunnels and it's monkeys (actually Barbary Macaques,) Although it covers less than 3 square miles, the strategic location of Gibraltar has made it one of the most fought over places in Europe. For centuries it has withstood political manoeuvring, sieges, battles and today, with its red call boxes, Union Jacks and high street shops, Gibraltar staunchly stands as a small pocket of England in the heart of the Mediterranean.
We start the tour in Casements Square and walk in to Gibraltar town centre towards Main Street, We the pass through Grand Casements Gates and cross the street to explore Ocean Village - The famous marina and site of many bars, restaurants and coffee shops. from there we explore the rock of Gibraltar and it's many attractions including :-
Apes' Den / Barbary Macaques - Gibraltar's wild monkeys in their natural habitat Gibraltar Nature Reserve, Upper Rock - Gibraltar's most prominent landmark and nature reserve Mediterranean Steps - UNESCO World Heritage Site Buffer Zone O'Hara's Battery - Highest point of the Rock of Gibraltar Skywalk - Glass lookout with spectacular views at the top of the Rock St Michael's Cave - A natural cave in the heart of the Rock Windsor Suspension Bridge - A suspension bridge - not for the faint hearted
I also check out the beaches of Gibraltar including
Camp Bay & Little Bay - A former quarry turned into a lido, and a little rocky beach by the cliffs Catalan Bay - A picturesque village by the sea located on the east side of the Rock Eastern Beach - Gibraltar's largest beach located adjacent to the airstrip Sandy Bay - A secluded beach with orange sand from the Sahara
And lastly Gibraltar Airport is listed as one of the most dangerous airports in the World. Not at least because of it's only 1777m long runway, but also because of the 4-lane Winston Churchill Avenue, which is crossing the runway
