10 Best Small Towns to Live in England

What are the best towns to live in England? Living in England means different things to different people. For some people, it’s either London or nowhere else whenever it comes down to the best places to live in England. Others would consider some other big cities if London is taken out. But did you know there are some who actually desire to live in small towns in England? Please don’t jump to any conclusion as to why they choose to live in a small town. It might not be due to just economic reasons. As you’d see on our list of 12 best small towns to live in England, certain towns have charms and allure that can cause a lover of beauty and nature to consider making them home.
10. Windsor, Berkshire
The next of the best small towns to live in England is Windsor in Berkshire. This town, for centuries, remains a popular destination for tourists living in England or the entire United Kingdom and for tourists from all parts of Europe. Those who chose to live in this town may have been attracted by the added fame it once received as the royal wedding venue for Prince Harry and Meghan Markle. You could find accommodation in Windsor Castle, the world’s largest occupied castle. Since it’s a weekend and holiday home for the Queen, those living in Windsor consider it a privilege to walk the streets with her majesty without visiting Buckingham palace.
9. Frome, Somerset
Now, let’s shift our attention to Frome as one of the 12 best small towns to live in England. We don’t need a lot of explanation that transcends being voted as one of the best places to live in the UK. Though small, this town has quality schools considered one of the best to cater to the needs of families intending to live in a small town in England. Many people living in modern homes in big cities crave living in a small town in a historic and architecturally fascinating building. There are plenty of these in the center of the town of Frome lined with many independent shops.
8. Henley-on-Thames, Oxfordshire
This town is home to the famous Henley Royal Regatta. This boat race coming up in early July always gives the residents of this beautiful spot which was established as a market town in the 12th century the opportunity to interface with thousands of visitors. Henley-on-Thames is chocolaty. Having a respite at Chocolate Café, a local hot spot known for chocolate treats, either hot or cold, is one reason to consider this town one of the best places to live in England. It’s a place people enjoy good cardiovascular health because walking the Thames Path National Trail is a regular part of life in this town.
7. Bakewell, Derbyshire
We next turn to Bakewell a small market town in the Dales of Derbyshire County. Bakewell too is among the best small towns to live in England. We agree with the popular opinion that ranks Bakewell well on the basis of its three highly rated principal primary schools, secondary schools, and preparatory school and college. Another one of the attractions making Bakewell one of the most popular small towns in England is its Peak District National Park and Derbyshire Dales. Living in this small town affords you a chance of finding a home in these prestigious locations with their charming stone cottages, attractive rugged moorland, and green valleys.

What are the best towns to live in Britain? You do not have to live in big cities to enjoy your life in the United Kingdom. The country has many small towns that provide enough comfort that anyone could hope to enjoy in big cities elsewhere. Determining the best of these towns can throw up a new set of challenges. These boil down to what an individual desires as a part of life and livelihood. At any rate, this video will highlight the small towns generally considered the best by those living in England or desirous of living in the UK. It should be noted that these best small towns to live in Britain are among the best small towns to live in England, as you would soon see.

12. North Berwick, Scotland
We feel good beginning this listing in Scotland. The Scottish town of North Berwick is the first to be considered, albeit in the 12th position among the best small towns to live in Britain. It is a seaside town and former royal burgh in East Lothian. The town situated on the south shore of the Firth of Forth, about 32 kilometers east-northeast of Edinburgh, had been a fashionable holiday resort since the nineteenth century. Its great beaches and exotic coastal sceneries are reasons good enough to consider this town one of the best. This town which is just a 30-minute train journey from Edinburgh is home to a mix of shops, cafes and bars, world-renowned golf courses, and even the 5-star Scottish Seabird Center.
11. Frome, Somerset, England
The next to be considered on this list is Frome, a market town in the eastern part of Somerset County in South West England. This town, sitting on the eastern flanks of the Mendip Hills is some 20 kilometers south of the ancient town of Bath. This probably calls to mind the ancient Roman Spa town. The town with a lot of historic and architecturally fascinating buildings and an attractive town center with many independent shops on both sides has a lot of artists and craftspeople who consider it the best place for them in Britain. It is close to the M4 motorway. It has one of the oldest train stations still in service in Britain with direct services to London Waterloo, Bristol Temple Meads, and Exeter St David's. Its vibrant nightlife is quite attractive.

10. Henley-on-Thames, Oxfordshire
Henley-on-Thames also deserves to be mentioned here. Considering the riverside location this of town with its surrounding landscape of lush hills and green fields, The Times recently voted it one of the best places to live in England. This pretty riverside market town situated on one of the most stunning stretches of the River Thames lends itself to relaxation, long lunches, and shopping. 9. Bakewell, England
We next shift our attention to Bakewell, a small market town. This town in the Dales of the county of Derbyshire is some 21 kilometers southwest of Sheffield. Its location in the southeast corner of the Peak District National Park makes it viable for businesses that can be operated more comfortably from a small town. An example of this is the world-famous confection, the Bakewell Pudding. The town is well served by the motorway network, thanks to its location just north of the Midlands. Also, from London, it takes about 4 hours of a train journey to reach this village on a direct route covering about 216 kilometers.
8. St Andrews, Scotland
Let us go back to Scotland to find the next place. The town we are considering next is St Andrews.

Henley-on-Thames ENGLAND ???????? Walking Tour /Thames very high in Jan & about to burst its banks? [4K]

Hi everyone, welcome back. Today's walk takes us through the beautiful & quintessentially English market town of Henley-on-Thames.

My visit was actually prompted by a friend telling me how high the river was at the time. See what you think when we visit the riverside. The recent heavy rain now seems to have stopped so hopefully the water level will subside a bit.

Henley (pronounced 'Hen-Lee') is situated near the borders of Oxfordshire, Buckinghamshire and Berkshire. It is probably best known for its annual rowing regatta which happens at the end of June.

Turn on the subtitles for full details of the tour.

Henley-on-Thames Walk: Town Centre【4K】

Located in the county of Oxfordshire, and around 35 miles west of central London, is the town of Henley-on-Thames, sometimes referred to as, simply, Henley.

Geographically Henley is situated at the southern fringe of the Chiltern Hills and directly adjacent to the River Thames as its name suggests. 'Henley' reflects its geography as it derives from Old English 'hēah', meaning high place and 'lēah', meaning forest or clearing.

Henley-on-Thames is known to have been an established settlement from as early as 1179, as records state that King Henry II had bought land for the making of buildings here. The first reference to a church here dates from 1204, while the first reference to a bridge dates from 1234.

Historical industries in Henley included agriculture, wool, glass, brewing and coaching inns. In 1688 William of Orange rested in the town on his march from Brixham in Devon to London. This took place during the Glorious Revolution in which James II was deposed from the throne with very little bloodshed. Thus the Dutch prince, William of Orange, became King William III and joint monarch with his wife Mary II.

In 1786 Henley Bridge was built. Featured at the start of the walk, this 5-arch stone bridge replaced an earlier wooden crossing. The River Thames at this area effectively marks the boundary between the counties of Oxfordshire and Berkshire. A short walk downstream from here, the Thames becomes the dividing line between Buckinghamshire and Berkshire (although only up to a point due to county boundary changes in 1974).

In 1829 Henley-on-Thames became the host of what was effectively the inaugural Boat Race between Oxford and Cambridge - England's oldest and most prestigious universities. Oxford won this race easily, and their winning boat can still be seen in the River & Rowing Museum in Henley. The next race wasn't until 1836, and in this instance was held in London - from Westminster to Putney. It would eventually become an annual event from 1856, by which time a course in west London between Putney and Mortlake had become the established location.

As a result of the bustle created in Henley from the 1829 boat race, it was decided that there was much potential to draw in visitors by holding their own rowing event. And so, in 1839, the inaugural Henley Regatta was held. This was a one-day event, but proved so successful that they expanded it to two days for the following year. In 1851, following a visit from Prince Albert, it was renamed Henley Royal Regatta - a name it has maintained ever since. It continued to expand into what is now a six-day annual summer event.

In 1857 the railway arrived in Henley-on-Thames. To this day it is the northern terminus of the Henley Branch Line, which connects to the Great Western Main Line via Twyford at the southern terminus. Travel to or from London typically takes between 50 and 70 minutes, factoring in the change at Twyford.

In additional to the first ever Oxford and Cambridge Boat Race and the annual Royal Regatta, Henley-on-Thames has hosted two Olympic Rowing Regattas: London 1908 and London 1948. In 2012 it was passed over for Dorney Lake near Windsor.

Famous people from Henley-on-Thames include actor David Tomlinson, TV historian Adam Hart-Davis and actress Leslie Ash.
